I now own a SX530 and SX230 so I have been working on a new version of AstroKam to support them. First light test came out really well and you can see it here.

http://starrydave.com/?p=895

Main upgrades are that PHD2 now works properly and I have now added integration with the All Sky Plate Solver software. This ensures that each target is accurately centered. The new version will also auto-update so it will be easier for me to maintain. I hope to launch the new version in a few weeks.

Sorry but I am out of my depth here. AstroKam uses chdkptpremote.net to connect to and control the camera. I only wrote the astronomy areas of the app. The errors you see in the AstroKam log are raised by chdkptpremote but I am not sure what they mean. Maybe the authors of chdkptpremote.net will chip in with advice?

One thing to try is to change the image format. My SX230 only works in 16:9 capture mode - any other ratio gives an error.

ill keep the aspect ratio in mind (did try it  no difference )
but for now i don't even get to see the camera in astrokam device list.

in chdkptp  i can see it apear/disapear on bus0:\\.\libusb0---0002--0x04a9-0x317a
when i disconect /reconnect or move wheel to record and back to play etc

send a forum pm to the other author about it.
i just found out about  chdk so don't know where to look either  :D

author's reply

It's been a very long time since I did anything with this, so I'm not up to date on what is going on lately. I also don't know how the library is used by AstroKam or which version is used; others have made their own version.

Looking at the code, it seems to me that there are two obvious possibilities. One is that you don't have access. Not sure if the "ERROR UsbError: Win32Error:Open UsbDevice 5:Access is denied." is pointing to that. If so, perhaps try running the application as administrator. The other option is that the version of CHDK is no longer compatible with the library. It does a version check (and LUA check) and if the version does not match, it will probably not be listed. (Depends on how AstroKam uses the library.) Which version (of CHDK PTP) is supported depends on the variant of the library thet AstroKam uses. You could try an older version of CHDK to see if that does work.

i had thought of trying to run astrokam as administrator but forgot to ask why this seems to be not possible.

ill try and find  some older builds for the camera but sofar only found the autobuild site http://www.mighty-hoernsche.de/
wich doesn't seem to preserve older builds

did find Canon PowerShot A470 Camera CHDK Firmware 1.4.1 Rev.4416  (added on site in 2016)
trough  google on softpedia.
ill give it a shot on a clean sd card.

same result , also tried astrokam10a  in admin mode

FWIW, you should always connect the camera in playback, and use PTP functions to switch to rec if needed. Switching between play and rec on the camera tends to cause problems.

I would be quite surprised if this is a CHDK version problem, it sounds a lot more like a libusb configuration or compatibility issue between libusbdotnet and the libusb driver. But if you want to try you can find some very old builds in the "Conserved builds" section under https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/Downloads

Don't forget what the H stands for.

tried libusb 1.2.6 and 1.2.5 manual
each time testing astrokam first  then chdkptp  to confirm if that still worked

still same error.

If you are still stuck, you could use the script version of AstroKam. This will shoot and rename your lights, darks and offsets but you will have to control your scope yourself. You could run the script from within chdkptp so you can still use your pc screen for focussing, review, etc.
Alternatively, I know that AstroKam works on A810, SX230 and SX530 which are all very cheap second hand. I would go for the 530 because of its zoom lens.

only thing that i can think of is there is something with .net installation  i did check to install 4.5  but it complained newer was on the system but
din't check if both x86/64 where installed

i already can't thank you enough for the phd2  recommendation   :D
just recently pulled my 10"  out of storage and  first long session with it  it already was tracking 1000% better
did 20 min's of 8 second pic's with my meade dsi with out guiding and could have done longer since target stayed in fov.

happen to know if someone hacked one of those camera's to have it's lens removed ?
cause  would like to see if i can get one to work in the scope eventually ,guess sx530 would be best as a piggyback if it has the best lens.

din't do much proceccing /stacking this was done by dsi software only combined the rgb layers quickly
also this cam doesn't have square pixels so software does scaling.

edit

seems there is also big second hand market for EOS series,
so think its probably smarter to get one of those for primary instead of trying to hack compact version.
there not that much more expensive then sx230 and cheaper then sx530
