Is it possible to take a shot with the lens cover closed?

I need to take some shots for astronomy called 'darks' which usually entails covering the lens with a cap. With a remote control camera it would be much easier if I could do this using the built-in cover.

On my A810 it looks like the cover opens automatically when the lens extends so it is probably mechanical and not controllable.

As an alternative, is it possible to take a shot in Playback mode when the lens is retracted?

Amazing! I asked the question more in hope than expectation. I should have known that CHDK would be able to do it.

It is amazing what CHDK can do, thanks to all the incredibly talented people who have contributed. But without waterwingz answering questions so promptly, nobody would know what CHDK can do. Thanks waterwingz!

Also, be sure to check "Enable Native Lua Calls?" In the CHDK misc. menu.

Here is a first test of the closed shutter idea on the Pleiades star cluster. I shot for an hour with automatic dark and biased frames and processed the results in Deep Sky Stacker and StarTools. Pretty neat for a £50 camera I think - the star colors are pretty good. Next up is to try and tease out some of the nebulosity.
