Card error on Powershot SX40 HS

Hello,

I  have run into a problem when loading CHDK on my memory card. First time around there was no issue by following the instructions. However, the second time around after a clean format of my SD card in the camera and after copying the CHDK files in the root directory using my card reader i get a "memory card error" once i plug it back in the camera and it doesn't allow me to take any pictures. It even doesn't recognize the card size. Once i format it in the camera all is ok again but as soon as i load any files through my SD card reader even just the vers.reg file it gives me the same error in cam.

I've tried low level formatting but the problem persists. The card is a FAT32 8GB SanDisk Ultra

If anyone has an idea what might be the root of the problem I'll be very grateful.

Thanks all

Its hard to say what's going on based just on your description.

I'll suggest doing the low level format in your camera again and then use this utility to install CHDK :

Thanks for this waterwingz. I did as you suggested however when i get to the scan for cards section in STICK i get this:

Drive A: <16MB
    readonly with one partition
    not bootable
    Partition  1:
         size=0MB
         format=Unknown

ANd form the log:

1 drives found
Drives: J
Analysing drive J
Checking access to device '\\.\J:'
Checking access to device '\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE4'
Failure checking device '\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE4' - error 5
Testing if hard disk - size=0
 testing J: bootable
Cards scanned - 1 cards found
 - card is read-only
 - card is read-only

So i can not continue afterwards. Maybe it's a problem with the card but i can use it normally in the camera?

Hmmmm ... when you reformat in your camera (I assume with the SD card lock "off")  can you then take pictures normally ?  And if so,  can you copy them from the card to your PC using your card reader?

What about taking the reformatted card and copying a picture back to the appropriate folder in the DCIM directory?

(I'm wondering if its a problem with your card reader rather than the SD card).

Yep the card works normally in camera after i format it there.

I can see and copy the photos from the SD card using the card reader to the HD.

I can also copy back old photos from my HD to the DCIM folder and they are displayed in the camera and the SD card works normally.

If i put anything else on the SD card i get the usual memory card error.  I suppose i'll try with another SD card  i find lying around here and see if i get the same issue...

Hi Ojobojo

that "error 5" in the STICK log means "access denied". Under Windows 7 and 8 STICK needs permission to issue the commands it does. Try starting STICK by double-clicking the stickx.cmd file. You'll be asked to permit STICK to go ahead and thinsg should then work.

I've updated the STICK webpage today to explain this problem.
