More basic questions then?  How are you determining what firmware version is in each camera?

I looked at the Build Info in the Misc. Settings menu.  They were custom builds of mine with EXMEM disabled.  I also edited my previous message to say that it works with CHDK_DE_a4000-101b-1.2.0-3192-full_ALPHA_rev_3192, too.

Hmmm .. that kind of misses the point of my question.  Sure, it told you what version you had loaded.  But not what firmware version the actual camera has.   

You need to load the correct CHDK version - the exact match - for the firmware version of your camera.   Sometimes a version that is close numerically will work but usually not.   

Unless you actually checked the firmware versions with something like ACID , its seem maybe you just got luckly that they loaded at all?  There are three ported versions of CHDK for the A4000 - you need to use the right one for each camera.

And that would tend to explain the script not working.

Whoops, I should have read the question more closely.  I can't remember which utility I used to get the version number back then, but it got the value from a JPEG image taken by the camera.  The version was definitely 101b.

And I'm not the original poster.  He/she has the problems, I don't.  I was just pointing out that the problem didn't occur in all A4000 models.

Thanks - doing too many things at the same time it seems.  Thanks for providing the update about your cams working.   I guess the question about f/w versions needs to go back to jdf35

I myself was unable figure out which key combo gives the firmware version. However, when I use the wrong version the screen just goes black when I load the firmware off the regular menu. One camera uses 101a and two cameras use 101b. It's the same issue on all of them, though.

rkomar, is there a way you can post your copy of the firmware so I can try it?

If you mean the firmware on the camera, you can't change it.  If you mean the CHDK software that I'm using, I put up a copy at http://www3.telus.net/rkomar/chdk-101b-rkomar.zip.  You can try unzipping it onto an SD card and trying it on your camera with the 101B firmware to see if it works.  It's based on rev. 2698 of the 1.2 development source tree, so it's at least 6 months old.  It also has EXMEM disabled (which I think is true now in the very latest source code, as well).  Which version did you install on your camera?

P.S.  I used the ACID utility to figure out the Canon firmware version on each of my cameras based on some JPEG images taken by them.  You should get a copy using the link that waterwingz posted and test to see exactly which firmware versions your cameras have.

I ran acid. It seems like I was using the right 101b version. I tried the new experimental version but the same thing happens. Could there be some other menu\tool setting changes I made not related to CHDK that are causing some kind of interference?

To make all this clearer to a new CHDK user, please insure that you have downloaded and installed the most recent CHDK version!

I'd highly recommend a blank SD card and using the STICK utility to do this correctly for you.

There is nothing special about rkomar's version that will help you.
