The older version functions the same as the new one with respect to this issue.  I was wrong when I posted about the older version. :-[

Sorry.

However, I continue to test.

Yesterday I was thinking "...in alt mode with script running focus must be at infinity for the lightning pics to be clear."  And the lightning pics others have captured are clear.  Makes me think my focus issue is a "personal" problem.

Yes - especially as the script itself does not attempt to do any focus manipulation.  The image it takes should be identical to the image you would get at that moment if you just pressed the shutter button.
