Or is this a 'feature' that we can toss in the trash in 1.3?

Phil.

FWIW,  I've seen people post in the DPR forum about increasing the size of the menu fonts as the first thing they do when installing / updating CHDK.   Its an old person vision thing as far as I can tell.

Not sure we need 78 different fonts / font sizes though.  At least comic sans is not one of them.

On that note, why do we need "OSD Codepage" though ?  I'm not even sure I understand what it does ... google here I come.  Hmmmm ... http://hackcanon.com/camera-tricks/interface/customizing-user-interface-chdk/

1) There are cameras with pretty bad resolution displays (77kdots, 84kdots, 115kdots). The default 8x16 Latin fonts are mostly readable, except for example when one has to distinguish between a capital "B", "8" and "0" - depending on the character's position and the colors.

2) Cyrillic is worse, some letters don't fit into 8x16 well

3) Using bigger RBF font on the same display:

Above screenshots are from a 84kdots display.

Additionally, not having better resolution fonts on high resolution displays may look ridiculous to some people.
So, I'd vote for keeping RBF.

As srsa_4c said ...

The built-in font has not always the best viewing results. Older cameras have small LCDs with small resolutions. That was the main reason to use extern rbf fonts.

Some people need a bigger font because they have bad eyes. Other people use an alternate font to view more. Not every menu entry has enough space. It's also dependent on the language.

The codepage is necessary for special chars in the fonts dependent from the language used.

1250 eastern europe
1251 cyrillic
1252 western europe
1253 greek
1254 turkish
1257 baltic

Optional fonts are a good feature.

Hello,
Old person here, I have asked for larger on screen characters, in the past and its true, increasing the CHDK menu font size is a must. But, the CHDK display font seems fixed and is frankly, too small for regular use without eye strain. Is there something being done about this?

PS In case anyone asks, I use prescription specs which cost me > £££ !

ummm ... you might want to keep an eye on this :

not perfect yet - some of the more text intense OSD functions still only display in a a small font.  I guess we could change that too ....
