Communication error when connecting camera to pc

Hi folks

I'm a newbie. Have installed CHDK on a 16gb card with two partions. When I need to empty my card I have to swap partions to get windows to reconize the right partion. Before setting the card back into the camera I need sdminste.exe to swap back again.

Are there no other and easier way to do this ? - I have the camera setup to remote control (shutter cable)

sincerly

What camera are you using?  Cameras released after 2010 do not need to use two partitions - they can boot from a single FAT32 partition.

You can swap partitions in the camera using CHDK's SD Card menu -> Swap Partitions option.

So before you pull the SD card from your camera,  select that and the PC will see the larger partition when you insert the card in your PC card reader.

To swap back afterwards,  if you put the full CHDK distribution on both partitions, you will have a copy of ps.fi2 on the larger partition.  You can thus put the SD card back in your camera, boot using the "Firmware Update" method, go to the SD Card menu, and select Swap Partitions to restore the partition order.  (Note that a few cameras do not support "Firmware Update" booting.)

You might also find the WASP utility easier to use than SDMinste.exe

Hi Waterwingz
My camera is from before 2010, so I need two partions.
I'll copy the CHDK-files to the other partion as well.

thanks for your advice..

Which camera?   As I mentioned above,  some don't support "Firmware Update" booting.

I'll need to know a little more about what you are doing?  Trying to do this via chdkptp or a similar program?

You're most likely experiencing an infamous weakness of Canon compacts, they do nothing about it other than documenting it in the camera manuals:
Quote
Communication error
• Images could not be transferred to the computer or printed due to the large
amount of images (approx. 1000) stored on the memory card. Use a
commercially available USB card reader to transfer the images. Insert the
memory card into the printer’s card slot to print.
The quote is from the manual. Only solution is not to have more than ~1000 pictures on the card :(
(I'm assuming you disable CHDK's remote control support before trying to connect with a PC.)

Yes - the shutter function is disabled. Ok - I have to live with activating the partions...

Thanks...
