Help with SX500 IS

Hi guys!

This is my first post on the fórum.
This is my story short: I got the powershot sx500 is camera on november, is the first time i have a camera that i can control manually, i didnt knew nothing about photography before that.

in this past month i been reading and watching a lot of tutorials, and exeperimenting a lot with my camera.
i installed CHDK a few days ago, and ive found a problem i couldnt solve yet.

I saved my pictures in DNG, and when i saw the DNG on the computer, for my surprise the image was distorted, i mean, the straight lines looked curved and all of that.

At first i thought maybe i was doing something wrong, i started reading and found out that the RAW formats dont have the automatic corrections that the camera does to the lens optic aberrations.

And reading some more, i found that there are programs to do the lens correction, and there are even profiles to do that with all the pictures of the same camera body and lens combination.

My problem is the next one: are there any lens correction profiles for the Sx500 Is? i couldnt find one yet.
I think i can correct each picture at a time, but is exausting.

I found out also, that i can create my own profile with an adobe tool, using the chessboard and all of that, but that seems to difficult for me at the moment.

So, can anyone help me?

Does anyone have a Sx500 IS lens correction profile?

And another question, just out of curiosity, this is something that happens becuase this cameras were not ment to shoot in RAW formats, or this also happens to the cameras that have RAW as a native format?

I mean, if you shoot in raw with a camera that is equipped with that by the manufacturer, or if you shoot with a dslr, do you have to do the lens correction also?

I hope someone can help, so i can start editing my DNGs!

Thanks in advance!!!

The need for correction depends on the quality of the lens. DSLR cameras have much better lenses and the need for correction is minimal or almost does not exist if you're not a too demanding. With the increasing processing power in the cameras, manufacturers have begun with putting worse and cheaper lenses because can easily make corrections to the jpg file.
Cameras that can save RAW files have better lenses.

I do not think you'll be able to use a lens profile of some of the other cameras. I think that you have to try and make a profile, but you can help others if you share with them your lens profile. :D
