Ixus 115 HS : Blocked after long Timelapse after battery failed

Helo,

After 3 years of CHDK uses on different canon ( A480, SD1100, and a other one) ), it looks like, I've just encounter my first "damage" with CHDK and my first register on the forum. So I am not so fair of finding the solution in the forum.

I use a IXUS 115HS with 101C firmware (sse ACID verbose below) with CHDK #1.1.0-2079

The script I used : Ultra Intervalometer (see below)

The battery was too low and the apn stop retracting the lens after 2 hours and 907 images done.

Now, when I want to start this IXUS, it succeed to load CHDK and show the last picture done.

But it can't open the lens, saying the lens has trouble and have to shutdown. Just the same when you want to start it having some thing physically blocking the lens.

When using a  SD card without CHDK, after some times of blinking, it directly ask for shutdown.

Could some one help me to solve this problem.

Philippe.

Isn't this just a hardware problem, a worn out the lens retraction mechanism?

Sounds like dirt in the mechanism to me, any other symptoms to suggest CHDK might be the culprit?

Easiest way to remove dirt out of the lens mechanism with the IXUS cams is to use a piece of paper/card and shim it around the gaps between the zoom lens. It took less than a minute to repair one when I tried it on an IXUS 105.

If it's not dirt it's probably worn out. Was the lens being retracted after each photo?

The script I used : Ultra Intervalometer (see below)   The battery was too low and the apn stop retracting the lens after 2 hours and 907 images done.
What was the exact error message you observed in the camera LCD display?

The Ultra Intervalometer script does nothing to cause the lens to extent / retract.  If simply issues shoot commands at an interval and the Canon firmware does its normal operations.  Lens retract is handled by the Canon firmware based on a value you set in the Canon menu.

The CHDK internal mechanism to perform a "shoot" simulates the press of the shutter button in software.  After that,  everything is normal Canon firmware at work.  In fact, it's exactly the same thing as pressing the shutter button yourself 907 times and having the shutter fail during after the last press.

I guess its possible something jammed due to battery failure while the lens was moving.  But the camera firmware detects low battery and shuts down prior to actually running out of energy so typically the camera would not halt while something was still moving.

Grit in the lens mechanism seems possible.  Or an early failure of the gear mechanism.   But I would tend to believe the only contribution due to CHDK was taking enough shots to cause the failure to appear.  The same thing would have happened if you had taken all 907 images by pressing the shutter button that many times.

Having said all of that, there is a wiki page were information about failures is logged :  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Camera_failures_suspected_to_be_caused_by_CHDK   If you feel strongly that CHDK software actually caused your failure (rather than this being a mechanical failure while using CHDK) you can log that information there.

Meanwhile, this is the best web site I have found for fixing these sorts of errors :  http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

... the dirt/paper solution didn't change anything0 :-(

Putting the ear on the screen when launching the Ixus, then it let hear a very little continue "buzz..." and little "tchac" every second with a small "tchac" ...

Looks like a broken lens isn't it, I was expecting CHDK moving then lens out of normal range that could be restore with a an expert script ... but it looks like, it's just a an "old" canon camera ...

Thank's for your answers.

Philippe.

Well as a last resort if you still want to repair it you could buy a replacement lens+CCD assembly such as this one. They fairly straightforward to install.

Is the message on your LCD "Lens Error E18" ?  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E18_error

I have used fix 6a  & 7b from my link post above with my ixus120_sd940 when the lens would not extend.  Two years later its still running well.

Based on the sounds yourare hearing,  your camera's motors are working but the mechanism is not responding.  There is nothing CHDK can do to fix that.   And you have nothing to lose at this point trying to help it out a bit with fix 6a or 7b.
