...less expensive cameras seem to only focus in discrete steps... It's like there are fixed focus points rather than a continuous focus.
I've already read about this. It's sure.

However, it does go to "infinity" but I guess I need to go back out and shoot without the script to see if there is a difference in sharpness?
Dear friend, there it's raining, here it's nighttime... better we take a break :)

I was trying to puzzle out if somehow we are not hitting the next "threshold" for your camera to take the next focus step "out".  But the script goes all the way to 70m before setting to infinity.

Yes - it's all very puzzling.  The three cameras I tested all work as expected.  Yours does not - although it does "lock focus" and does focus adjust as long as the focus distance is less than about 1m.

Here what i found:
the real focus distance that i get with your "infinity" script is the same that the camera sets when it cannot focus
and a yellow AF frame with "!"  is displayed ... but i don't know what it means.

In any case, considering that you've spent a bunch of time to resolve the "infinity issue" of the ixus 125, please let it be. I'll live without.
Absolutely pleased with your "video key toggle raw" mod / gift.

A lot of work has gone into the 1.3.0 MF updates. If it's not working on your camera, it might not be working on other cameras. It would be nice to know.

Check back occasionally in case I have other questions?  (Turn on email notification here in your forum profile if you haven't already?)

Thanks.  Here's a link to part of what is concerning me : New CHDK script for KAP - UAV for fast shutter speeds. Sound familiar ?

I've attached another update to the test script.  This one allows you to shoot with no focus lock - just set_focus() commands.  Based on the test spreadsheet you posted, this should work without MF or AFL set. Can you try it?

If that works, try running the script again with no focus lock,  but first activate the camera's AFL mode ? (Press the shutter button down half way, wait for focus beep, press the < arrow button.)

Please clarify which script settings i've to flag ("Lock via" = MF - AFL - none).
Then i've to run the script without or with the native (canon) AFL. Right ?
And where to lock the (canon) AFL? At infinite? Or at a closer subject?
Just a bit confused  :)

Set "Lock via" to "none" and rerun the test please.  Try without native AFL first, then with it. It doesn't matter where you lock it - I just want to see if the script can set focus when the camera is in that mode.

In the first series ("Lock via" to "none" and native AFL off) i got results similar to previous test: slight focus increment between 1 and 3 (maybe 4). Then stuck at less than 1 meter
In the second series ("Lock via" to "none" and native AFL on) all pics stay focused where i lock with native AFL.

It seems to me that without the native AFL this script acts in the range of Macro.

The script does not know anything about macro and works properly on my different camera models.  However, this raises an interesting possibility. The underlying function call found by the sigfinder might be wrong - or it's finding a set_macro_focus() function rather than set_focus()?
