A720 limits: submit what you know works or doesn't work.

Hi I'm new to photography and happened to buy the a720 IS.  I just got CHDK to work last night and really enjoy it so far.  I am using Allbest 50 (I think that is newest), but still dont how to use it properly.  Anyways to get to the point, I am using the build but I dont know what I should EXPECT (ive read posts here where people ask a similar question and get one of those "try it yourself and let us know" type of response) in terms of max shutter speed, lowest iso, aperture values etc.

I realize that my a720 might be different from another, but I dont expect there to be a huge difference.  So all a720 owners that know what tehy are doing could they tell me (and everyone) what values work for THEM and what values don't.

At least a720 owners would have a rough idea where to start testing for there camera.  For example, if most people report that the shutter speed of 1/64k does not work at that speed or EVEN close to that then I would consider that info useful.

Once I know more about my camera (im new to photography so by more I dont mean to be an expert as that would take too long) I will share what values have worked for me.

Yes DataGhost, the sort of information found on the wiki link you placed would be good (except for the blank spaces :P).  The wiki is severely lacking.  The forums should be a feeder for the wiki, so we should get information from all camera models (all we need are observations and the corresponding camera models).

Phantomse, the a720 uses a DryOS so afaik there is no firmware update option (I might be wrong).  As for your cards, I have not attempted to format a 8gb Patriot SDHC but have done so with a 4GB SDHC.  You prob wont be able to just simply (well it isnt really difficult) format your card with the windows GUI.  I used the command prompt, and I followed the information given by a forum user BB in    loading the allbest-a720-100c-31 CHDK firmware                          <---------1

Then after the format use info in this link   720 IS and FAQ page help          <--------2

Dont forget that after you have your card set up, to lock it.

Well it doesn't really matter that the question is being asked in a wiki.  The question has not been answered and wont be answered any time soon if no one reminds people.  Therefore pointing to the wiki any time someone asks a question is really just typical forum behavior (on most forums).

I got CHDK installed as I followed two threads, not by following the wiki.  The wiki is good to have, but currently the forums offer a sadly a better palce to get info for the a720IS.  Certainly older models will be served better by the wiki, but thats not my concern.

Maybe there should be a section in the forum for the discussion of actual limitations of cameras (the wiki has not served me well).  Anyways I'll ask my question again some other time.

Barney I think you are a little confused as to my intentions.  I state that I am new to photography only as an introduction since it was my first post, and I am new to photography.  I did not imply that I need private tutoring.  I also did not demand anything (I believe I asked a question not in a demanding way, but please show me why you think it is demanding).

I never asked (or demanded) that people tell me the specs of my camera I asked(thats right asked) that they(the ones who know what they are doing) tell what they got with their camera, as not all cameras of a given model are going to be identical.
"But no, instead you whine and moan and complain that nobody is doing it for you"   <----- made me smile (please quote me im not sure what you are talking about)

By the way, I learned how to get CHDK on my camera by using two threads, WHICH I have referenced to two other users, instead of telling them to search the forums or read the wiki.  I OTHER words, I have helped people or attempted to do so at least.

You assert that a720 owners are gaining a status derived from my posts?  WOW, I didn't know I had that much influence (I assumed I had none).  I am a single user and do not represent anyone here, but thats how I feel, others can think however they want.

ARE YOU an a720 owner by the way?  I certainly did not intend to ask you for help (I've read some of your posts).

Well Barney the fact (according to any respected dictionary) is I didn't demand anything, yet you say I did and then try rationalize why you say such things with your brand of logic (that right you seem to use some kind of reasoning Im not aware of)

I compounded the problem?  Just because you provide a quote doesn't mean the quote is backing up your assertion or argument.  If I compounded the problem, then surely the problem is now larger as a result of me helping (at least, as generally people read others posts for assistance, wow what a concept) two users.  Soon the problem will be huge lol.  Please for goodness sake think before typing or dont respond to this thread as it wasn't for people to bash others.

Just to use some of your "logic".  If I compounded the problem, then that means everyone who looked at those threads have also compounded the problem.  Did you look at them lol.  <------------I point this out as you need to evaluate your logic, as its quite fuzzy.  Instead of telling (not asking) others to edit the wiki, why dont you tell yourself or skip telling yourself and just do it.  If you don't want to do that then thats fine, but don't tell (telling is different than asking) others to do so.

By the way it is my opinion that accusing people of doing or saying things that they have not done (with respect to reality) is unhelpful, but hey thats just my opinion.
