I installed 1.2.0-3367 but still no luck - the settings you suggested (plus a bunch of other combinations I tried) still didn't make the camera select a higher ISO than 400 in HQ Burst mode, nor a slower exposure than 1/8s!

Additionally, although I've copied the CCHDK?.CFG and OSD__4.CFG files from my previous installation of CHDK, my custom settings (user menu, OSD) were not saved in 1.2.0-3367 !

I didn't try my tests in HQ Burst mode.   Can you confirm things work in normal shooting mode?

In P mode, shooting a dark scene sends the exposure to 1 second but keeps the ISO at 100 instead of increasing it, so I guess it doesn't really work as expected there either.

However, my initial intention (see thread title) is to be able to have a correct exposure/AutoISO trade-off in *HQ Burst mode*. Do you think that's doable at all?

Also, as I mentioned, although I've copied the CCHDK?.CFG and OSD__4.CFG files from my previous installation of CHDK, my custom settings (user menu, OSD) were not saved in 1.2.0-3367

Strange - it works for me.  I should have mentioned that the Canon ISO setting probably needs to be in AUTO mode.  Did you try it that way?

I have no idea.  We're just taking it one step at a time here.

There were a number of changes to how the config files were created / saved sometime last year.  This could be the issue here.

There are a couple of other approaches to managing config files going forward discussed here :
     CHDK Configuration Setup Script
and here:
      Save & Restore different configurations
They might be of interest to you?

Oh, right - if I set ISO=auto in the camera settings (in P mode), then the Custom ISO works well across the entire range, and the exposure does too. But then again this isn't so useful, as you could simply use it like that without CHDK. This feature is most useful when taking burst shots (HQ burst mode), but there unfortunately it doesnt work..

As for the settings import, the script seems to only work if you first save your settings before replacing the CHDK version (unless I misunderstood). I just moved my old CHDK isntallation to my computer, then copied the new version onto the card and replaced the CFG files, with no effect whatsoever. Even so, it's a shame settings aren't simply stored in a single file, this would have made restoring them a lot easier.

Not quite.  If you read the original posts by the author of that function (tsvstar), he was looking for a different algorithm than what the standard Canon P or AUTO modes provide.

There are quite a few forum threads about burst mode in the SX50 and it being treated differently than normal shooting mode.  For example : http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=11272   If this is going to change sombody will have to do some additional hacking down at the assembly code level.

Not sure what went wrong but that should have worked.

Up until last year they were a single file.  They were split out to allow storing some features (like OSD settings) separately in case a major version change required changing other features.

Aside from overwriting the four CFG files with my old ones, is there anything else I can try to restore my old settings? It's really frustrating to have to redo all the OSD & user menu settings! :(

Is the Auto ISO problem in HQ Burst mode (it never exceeding the arbitrary ISO 400 value, unrelated to anything in the Settings) likely to be fixed for the SX50 sooner than for the SX40, or do they in fact use the same CHDK code?

Also, it seems that adding 1/4s to the bottom of the list of possible exposure values (for auto custom ISO) was easy enough - can at least that change be implemented in the stable version, so that it's not limited to 1/8s as the slowest exposure?

Thanks!!

@philmoz : any idea why this is not working for him ?

The code for AutoISO is common to all CHDK releases.  Where the hooks are placed that call the functions it uses are unique to each camera version.   Does the SX40 have the same problem?   I'm trying to recall if any other camera with burst mode has this "fixed"?  When I get a minute I'll do some searching.

Forgot about that one. The standard protocol is to just fix bugs in the stable version so this would normally go into the development (1.3.0) version only.  As the change is trivial,  I'll see if reyalp is okay with putting it into the 1.2.0 version as well (although the code there is a bit different so it will need a different patch file).

Many thanks! Not sure about other cameras, but mine (SX40) definitely does have this problem.

Thank you very much once again. I look forward to hear whether this change will make its way into the next stable version. By then hopefully we'll have figured out the problem with the re-used settings, so that I don't lose the settings once I update to the new version.

I don't believe there is currently a problem with re-used settings.  I update my CHDK version with almost every new rev of the trunk and I can't recall ever having lost any setting.   But I also have that setup script that I posted configured to my preferences so it would not be a big deal if I did.

edit : The patched file I shared with you was 1.3.0 though.  I don't recall if that should be able to use 1.2.0 settings.
