Is the USB ID pin used by Canon?

The 5 pin mini USB port has an additional ID pin. My question is: Does Canon use this pin? - or to be more precise: is this pin connected to anything inside the camera (one could find this out if someone has the shematics of a Canon camera - could not find any free service manual including the schematics) or is this pin simply not connected?

thanks

well this schematics shows only a connector (J5 with 12 pins - which seems not to be the USB connector itself - or is this the new 11 pin mini USB connector which connects video and ousio out too? If yes what about pin 4 which is defined as the USB ID pin?

thanks

Sadly there is a lot more to this than meets the eye. Which camera are you enquiring about, because there are several different answers to the question depending on which Canon model you are dealing with.

(For what it is worth, Pin 4 in the above diagram appears to be vbus (http://www.beyondlogic.org/usbnutshell/usb2.shtml#PowerVbus))

Certainly some of the older Ixus models *don't* use this pin... see here... http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=9849.msg100810#msg100810 however most of the more recent cameras actually use a 10 pin (11 pin? 12 pin?) connector in place of the standard 5 pin one.

Pin 4 (USBID) is an identifier for USB host functions (e.g. USB on to go) which is not in use with a canon camera. All newer cameras with HDMI out have a combined socket for USB and analogue video.

This post may give some more details about the current and  future uses of the Micro/Mini-b ID-Pin.

Key Features of MHL Technology

"...MHL technology is connector agnostic, so you can utilize existing as well as proprietary connectors.
The MHL specification defines a 5-pin interface that can be mapped to connectors currently in use..."

* Real Plug & Play
* Fast Charging;  Power charging up to 10W
* Brilliant Resolution;  UHD display with up to 4K video
* Immersive Audio;  8-channel sound
* Remote Control;  Interoperable remote control features to navigate your apps on the big screen

see ... http://www.mhlconsortium.org/about/FAQs.aspx
"...10. Why is an additional connectivity solution needed, doesn’t a wireless solution offer the same capabilities?..."
"...11. What does it mean that manufacturers can utilize existing connectors, and what is the impact?..."

Attached, with a bit of Artistic licence, some MHL and Micro/Mini-b ID-Pin concept's

Pure "Speculation", may be, Canon will join the mhl-consortium.org and drop the HDMI connector
and just use MHL-Enabled USB in order to save costs. The USB-Cable and CdRom software is no
longer supplied with some of the new cameras.

H-H
Some more Pure "Speculation";
May be those cheap, eBay, MHL Micro-USB Dongles can be modified to do this kind of stuff.
