Hi...just stressing about getting the 'one camera to rule them all', like most of the noobs probably. Wanting to do doc scanning and scientific time-lapse image comparison, and just noticed that the only stable-release SX that has more than 12MP is the SX30. Is that just a coincidence?

Stable and beta designations are arbitrary and up to the person doing the port.  Most of the time,  the porter forgets to go back and remove the Beta designation.   If the port is available from the CHDK stable branch (currently 1.2.0) then it's likely as stable as it's ever going to be.
