hello again.  i noticed that a movie got made this time, in the DCIM folder.
that was unexpected.
Not unexpected - see below.

usually when i pressed the on/off button i got the lens to come out.
this time it didn't until i turned the big knob at the top of the camera and back again.
Strange.

anyhow i got the lens out and did the ca-1 test again,  i did a beep once, the first time i pressed the ca-1
after that it was the observation as before,  i.e. RELEASED when i still had my finger on the button.
In reading the code, it seems that is normal.  The CA-1 will send a "full press" signal to the camera while you are still holding the button down.  It does not wait for you to release the button.

i also pressed the shutter button on the camera as well during the test as well but not at the same as the ca-1 trigger button.
That would not show up in the log file.   Did it actually take a picture when you did that?

i have attached this latest log file.  i noticed that this time there was only one file and the date time stamp was correct, unlike the previous cases.
Two things happened that I can see in this log.

The first is that it appears you had the Control Mode set to Video rather than Normal?  That's what the log seems to say and that's probably why you found a video file on the SD card.  Please repeat the test (again) in shooting mode with the Switch Type set to CA-1 and the Control Mode set to Normal.

The second thing appears to be a possible bug with video mode.  In the log,  the code starts video but does not stop it the next time you press the remote button.  That's also why there was only one log file.   I need to look more closely at this but I do not believe it's related to your inability to take still pictures with the CA-1.

hi
got photos,!!!

wow, i double made sure the control mode was normal in chdk menu mode.

Then again to get the lense extended out i turned the knob at the top of the camera and back to its original position,  I think it AUTO was the original position.  I don't what its name is, but it has things like (going clockwise) AUTO, LIVE, P, TV, AV,M and so on.

I'm not sure what the functions mean.

this pressing the ca-1 trigger, i heard the bleep which i get when i press the shutter button.

I can't explain what i was wrong before, its as if nothing ever was wrong its taking photos as i expect.

What is the correct way to go into shooting mode from chdk mode?

i am pleased but also a  bit puzzled why i had so much problems.

hello

i think it could be that pressing the shutter button, the one that takes photos may be the way to go to shooting mode.  i tried that and i didn't have to turn the knob back and forth to get the lens extended.

thanks

hello again

i think the next step would be to try this in the non-debug build.  last time i think i used ACID, not stick and the firmware update method to load chdk.  is it possible that ACID doesn't work properly.

thanks

If you simply press the shutter button, I think you will find that the lens will extend as well.

It's the dial that sets the shooting mode.  You can read more about what the different positions mean on page 36 in the manual for your camera.   Download it here :

javedjoe90,

Good to know the  CA-1 works.
I would like to get one.
I also would like to use a filter adapter but can't find one for the SX160is.

Does chdk manual focus work on your SX160is?
The manual focus that can be set on chdk's menu.

According to the testing results from this thread,  the SX160 should be able to focus from the CHDK menus.

waterwingz,
Ok, I just tested it and chdk's MF override works if the SX160IS is set to AF mode.
If set to Canon MF mode, and you try chdk's MF override the SX160is crashes.
Perhaps, chdk's MF override should be disable if the camera is set to Canon MF mode, so it won't crash.
