I'm sure the answer to this willl bring hand to forehead.
So the Wiki says I have to start the camera directly in play mode, not using the power button. How? Holding the camera/play switch doesn't do it. Holding each of the other buttons won't do it.

Has anyone loaded CHDK onto an A590is and can tell me what button to press?

I had a quick look at the A590 porting thread - no issues reported there. Nothing bad on the A590 wiki page either.

I don't have an A590 but looking at the picture,  I assume you just need to start the camera with the Record/Playback switch in the Playback position when you press the power button.

On a related note, how did you setup your card?  You might want to look at this page : Prepare your SD card and use the STICK utility linked at the top of the page.  It will make your life a lot easier and you will have a card that supports SD card lock autobooting.

Sorted. Went back to basics - clean card, loaded CHDK on it, put camera in Play mode and powered up. Looked carefully through the menu options and there was the firmware update option.
Loaded and working.
So perhaps the Wiki needs to say for the A590 that you can't start it in Play mode without using the power-on button, but it does work.
Palm applied to forehead with vigour.

If you used STICK, try setting the SD Card Lock switch to "Locked" and restart your camera.

If you use autoboot method with locked card you can power up the camera directly in record mode.
