A470 and external PSU warning.

Hi All.
Just like to share an observation regarding an issue with A470 (possibly others too that i dont have) when Plugging in an external Psu.

Take note that there are many build qualities of the diameter 2.5 x 0.7 plugs on the market. The small Insulating section near the tip can sometimes be very short (less than 1.5mm). This can cause a momentary short circuit of the battery supply!

If you plug this in (even with Psu switched off) while the batteries are still in the camera (and camera turned off) you run the risk of blowing the protection fuse on the mainboard protecting the battery.

Always remove the Batteries. I have other cameras where this is not an issue.

The fuse is replacable, but it is Surface Mount and pretty smal (about 2.4mm x2mm). You need a steady hand and good fine tipped soldering equipment to replace it. (Assuming you can get you hands on the replacement fuse in the first place. ----I had to find an equivalent from a decent supplier).

I have two A470's and i conducted this test on both cameras with identical results. Same test on A1200, A530 and A550 and they were fine, they don't seem susceptible to this problem.

Not usually a problem i know, but i discovered this as during the build and test of a waterproof rig i was swapping between Psu and batteries. Problem occurred immediately when not using a genuine canon adapter (they have a longer insulated portion on the plug it appears to anything after market).

Buy your own plugs from a quality mainstream supplier and the insulated portions of the plugs are more similar to genuine canon plugs.

Hope this helps others prevent having a fiddly soldering job.

Would you mind posting a picture (or link to) of what this plug looks like?

Given this description,  I'm pretty sure most people would not consider the fuse replaceable   ;)

Image of a Canon/ Good Quality Plug Alongside a typical El-Cheapo Plug for comparison, see the notes on the image itself for explanation of the problem.
