Let's say that I will be content when I will be able to do something like this:

All you need is a boat, some rocks and a medium-sized hidrogen star. Easy :)

Right now the fusion-reactor is not ready! (At least on earth.)

@barney:

I, and I assume others, don't have all the experience you probably have, so I need to practise very much to gain more experience, because when I look at a scene that is worth photographing, I don't want to think:
How can I get all the dynamic range into a normal looking photo?
That what it's all about: experience. ::)

:'( Even with much spaces and Returns I can't catch up to your post-length. :D

WAY overprocessed.
Perhaps, but nothing compared to the "HDR-gothic skies" fashion that seems to be around in these days!

> very distracting wide halos around the hull of the boat
That I don't find terrible

> And the shadows at the bottom of the hull look very unnatural.
Ok, but recovering from such difficoult light conditions leaves some traces.
You might say "he shouldn't have been looking for those light conditions in the first place"...

What I quite don't like is the over-saturation (blue plastic thing, blue and red rope) that is distracting indeed

> I think in all the HDR samples I've ever seen on the net only 1 or 2
> made the technique seem worthwhile.
Do you remember the links?

> Everyone keeps hoping that post-processing will salvage their photography skills.
True ! Add some strong flou, and that focusng problem will go away :-)

How can I get all the dynamic range into a normal looking photo?

"Can" you get all the dynamic range into a normal single snap using a CCD/CMOS sensor?

The attached was taken with a Sony CCD sensor in a P&S camera, one shot. I wouldn't apply HDR to this (even if I knew about it at the time). It would have destroyed its realism.

I would :) It's too soft and natural for me :D Also the contrast is towards the sky, the ground should be inviting to look at too...
