Don't know about A580, but in this thread A590
A590 owners have reported that they're unable to make a firmware dump for the A590;
there are suspicions that Canon uses a new form of encryption.
Without a firmware dump the porting can not start, and it's hard to say how difficult
porting will be ...
For the A580, if you have access to this cam you could try dumping the firmware yourself.
It's relatively easy, all you need is:

1) a card reader + empty SD card
2) access to a Windows computer
3) this little program: zSHARE - cardtricks127.exe

If that does not work, at least we know that A580 has identical Canon 'anti-dumping' ...

Summarizing, 1 way or another, it's probably gonna be a while before CHDK is supported for these cams ...

i'm in the process of getting a a580
since i'm a little knowledgeable in programming and IT in general ..
i may be able to try more things than non-technical owners would be asked to try..
also i like to take things apart

i'm not big on soldering things and such ..
but opening a case and such wont be stopping me much

so i'll see what happens when i get my hands on one..

i'll keep you posted..

A580 firmware was not able to be dumped using the current known methods.
Might require a hardware mod possibly to get the dumper loaded..if it is possible to bypass the block that is.
