ELPH 330 HS :10 minute video time limit

I would dearly love to have the :10 minute video recording time limit eliminated from the ELPH 330 HS. Some Canon cameras are afflicted with this, some are not. I don't know how or why they decide these things.

Thanks in advance,

Nafraf,

Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded the attachment. The PS.FI2 file seems to be missing from the file. Is this an issue? The only thing I've found that is different on your attachment is an md2.bas script in the scripts folder. Is this the modification that you made?

PS.FI2 was not generated for this test version, to load CHDK please use bootable sd-card method.

I got this camera four days ago. It was the last one available in my area. I have been unable to find out from Canon the reason for the :10 minute limit.

Some posters on the web have suggested that the limit is because of EU tariffs, others suggest that it relates to heat build-up on the chip.

Since I am unable to verify which is correct, and since I can't replace this camera if I burn it out, I think I will work with it as it is, for the time being.

Thanks for your help.

Note that nothing prevents a camera user from restarting movie recording right after it stops. CHDK is not even needed for that. That's very close to 'unlimited video recording time' offered by CHDK.
Movie length is further limited by the 4GB file limit and battery performance.
Temperature is continuously monitored by the camera, I assume it has some sort of protection against overheating.

Some users have reported the temperature reached by the sensor during video recording:

I don't remember any report of camera damaged by extended video time feature.

The 10 or 30 minutes limits are because of a cheaper import tax in europe. Longer video record time means, the import tax is calculated for a camcorder. (Welcome in the global world  :haha)

I have tested the extended record time function with the SX220. After an hour recording the CMOS sensor reaches about 65 degrees celsius.

I have tested the extended record time function with the SX220. After an hour recording the CMOS sensor reaches about 65 degrees celsius.

Does it reach that temperature fairly quickly and then settle there or does it continue to climb slowly over the whole hour?

Continuously but slowly. I see no very great risk. After reaching this temperature is the value relatively constant 65 to 70 degrees, also after 90 minutes record time.

But I think, it is important to observe the temperature.
