I lock it and put it in the camera and start by pushing the play button.
...
Either way the camera just starts as normal with no sign of CHDK.
Does the camera display a "Card Locked" message when you do this ?

Two possibilities come to mind:
1) CHDK is actually loaded, but the splash screen isn't displayed. Have you tried pressing the alt button (should default to "play" on this camera)
2) Your camera does not correctly detect the lock switch. We have seen this happen before on other cameras, and it tends to go unnoticed because most people don't lock their cards. Sometimes poking the lock switch in the SD card slot can remedy this. Or maybe the plastic tab on the card is out of spec and a different one will work. You can also try a locked card that does not have any CHDK stuff on it. The camera should report "card locked".
Don't forget what the H stands for.

I tried another card and loaded CHDK without problems using STICK. Strangely you can actually hear how the lock switch catches every time I put in the old card.

Which exact camera and firmware version do you have?

Are you running CHDK? I would strongly suggest not attempting to do a Canon firmware update with CHDK running. I'd suggest using a card that is freshly formatted or has never been used with CHDK.

If you are having trouble with a Canon update, you should contact Canon support.

My camera is SX 270 and firmware 101b. I follow the steps of the site of canon, but nothing changed. Only error message.

The ver.req info screen should also show a public version number, like 1.0.1.0. What does this show?

Note that a Canon firmware update needs to be specifically for the SX270, even though the SX280 and SX275 firmwares are compatible from a CHDK POV.

Assuming you are using an update intended for your camera, and version is listed on http://www.canon-europe.com/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_compact/powershot_sx_series/powershot_sx270_hs.aspx?type=firmware&firmwaredetailid=tcm:13-1061909 as being upgradable, I'd suggest contacting Canon support.
