What i also suggest:
- use manual mode
- use fix ISO, e.g. 100 or 200 (with higher values you're getting more noise in your image)
- disable AiAf (the multi-box autofocus), set focusing to 'center' (both in the Canon menu)
- set focus to infinity (only available in manual mode)
- use a tripod; you can use a remote - but you don't need it, you can also use the custom timer (in the Canon menu)
- enable the Noise reduction setting (Auto or On)

Well, I am back.
I managed to shoot a number of halfway decent pictures.
Currently I am trying to find out what part of the sky is actually visible... :-)
I cannot yet correlate my photo's to e.g. stellarium's rendering of that date/time/location.

I went as high as ISO400 and 20 seconds exposure.
Noise was not too bad, although ISO200 is of course better but shows less stars.
Used a custom timer to avoid shakiness.
No stars show the movement of the sky, as far as I can tell.
So I am fairly happy! :-)

Thanks!
