newbie here to CHDK and pretty much a newbie to the camera world. i am using the canon sx160is and having some troubles. i believe i get chdk to load fine. when i push the shutter half way it shows more stuff on the screen then normal (time, batt, ect) but im having troubles figuring out how to get into the new menus. my camera does not have a print, alt button. any help would be appreciated. i am interested in using the motion detect, hdr, time lapse the most

First, you may want to use this application to install CHDK. When done, you'll be able to enter/exit ALT mode by a short press on the camera's playback button (press that button longer for its original function). You can enter the CHDK menu by pressing MENU in ALT mode. For scripts, you can start here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/User_Written_Scripts . In case you have further questions, you can ask here.

That is quite unusual - STICK is very reliable and the sx160 is well supported by CHDK. Drag and drop does not work well in Linux PC's and maybe some others.  Browse always works.

What exactly happened that "wouldn't let you go any farther" ?

If you want to research other methods of installing CHDK, they are all described here :  Prepare Your SD Card   You should be able to just unzip the CHDK install file to the SD card (telling unzip to recreate folders) and run via the "firmware update" method.

after trying again i do not see the CHDK logo on the boot screen, just the small red box
This means you have not installed all of the CHDK files in their respective folders (directories) on the SD card.  Again - the instructions linked above will help you do this.   And STICK always does this correctly for the different combinations of SD card and camera model/age.  I'd strongly recommend trying again to get that working described there.
