Help,

Looking to purchase a Canon Camera that will take CHDK and will be the best value for the money.

I was looking at the S5

but will I get the best features and value for my money?

 I think you have selected the right one,you may pay a little more by purchasing S5,you may not like its
 big size,average low light performance,slightly above average dynamic range,annoying red fringings at
 full zoom.

 But consider the unique things that S5IS offers:-
 F/3.5 at full telephoto
 Powerful Flash
 12x optical zoom with 128 zoom steps(Available also during movie)
 Continuous AF in Movie Mode
 Exposure Control in Movie Mode
 Stereo Sound Recording with 44kHz sampling rate
 Wind Filter
 Ultrasonic Zoom Motor
 Best Movie Quality of All Canon P&S
 
 Actually if you want a 'current' canon P&S cam to shoot high quality movies,then S5IS is the
best choice. (Some people prefer it even to the hybrid TX-1 that claims to deliver "HD" video)
 If you are not lured by megapixels,you may be interested in buying an S3IS which will be
 less pricey and offers nearly all the features above except the extra megapixels and unusable
 high ISO. If you are not interested in long zoom & movie mode,then plenty of alternatives are there.

Thank you - That is exactly what kind of Information I was looking for.

I think I am going to go for the S5IS - I think in the long run it will be worth the extra money. I like the options you listed for the Movie Modes.

Can you do Manual Focusing on this - Movie mode and photo mode.

Does anyone hav experience with a bounceable hot shoe flash on the S5 (which one?)?

Is CHDK able to improve the flash sync for it?

For s51s it seems canon markets a dedicated flash.

For my s3is, which does not have a hot shoe, I use starblitz as an external flash. It is an old flash from my film camera days. It is a twin flash with built in slave. The main head can be rotated in any direction for bounce and it can be zoomed to cover from 28mm to 105mm fov. A second head acts as fill in flash. I attach the flash on a straight bracket and it is triggered with the on board flash through the slave. It has two auto modes and a full power mode. It works perfectly on my s3is.

About the hotshoe flash: it is a new feature in the S5. They have a hotshoe flash for the S5 on sale for around $40 on amazon.
