What does it take to turn off the histogram?
It is always on... in the way.

Something else must be going on. That does not work. The histogram also flashes. I've reset defaults several times. Camera is SX20 IS.

Try unticking CHDK settings -> Enable half-press shortcut keys . Other possibility is the native Canon histogram (if this camera has it).
What exactly is "flashing" on the screen?

edit:
or perhaps nafraf has a better idea what it could be.

Version 102d. Used 'stick' to DL CHDK. The histogram flashes when in 'alt' but only in 'alt'. OK else where but I want it off. It is set to 'don't' in histogram settings.

Unticked 'enable half-press. Still flashes in 'alt'.

Update: no longer flashes after pressing 'menu'. It is always on however.

I thought this sounded familiar - there were reports of the same thing with the SX50is.  Although I was never able to reproduce it on mine.

I think the solution there was to disable the key shortcuts in the CHDK menu.
