Reading out with higher bit depth

Hi all,

I was wondering whether it is possible to read out the data from the chip with a higher color bit depth then the usual 10 (12,14). I would like to 'emulate' long exposures by combining shorter ones, but to actually mimic its properties, one would need as high bit depth as possible.

Does anyone of you know how the reading out work? Is the bit depth hard-wired to the camera?

Thanks guys!

Yes, it's a property of the hardware. Note that only quite old cameras are 10bpp, most are 12 and the g1x is 14.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
