Automatic transfer of images to PC over USB

Hi

I wonder if you can use CHDK to change the mode of the camera to USB transfer mode (PC mode), so I can get images from the camera via USB. This would be great for several things, security camera, high resolution pictures for remote viewing robots, etc. etc.

Now this is really a two part question, I mean it might be possible even if it isn't in the current builds. So does anyone know of anywork on this?

I've ordered a cheap Canon which I will probably hardware mod to do this, but doing it in software would be so much cooler (cheaper).

similar thread that didn't show up in my searches, perhaps I have the terminology wrong:

* CHDK Control of the Mode Dial for A570IS
* KAP Discussion Page - Canon CHDK Hack + AuRiCo + BBKK + Dopero Kite  = KAP Heaven

I suggested this part in another thread earlier today...

Eye-Fi » Home

Feature Set:

Eye-Fi » A Wireless Memory Card?

Looks interesting--It looks like you should be able to read/write the WiFi SD card while it is in your camera (and the camera is turned on).

Built-in Wi-Fi connects to your home network.

    * Wi-Fi Security: Static WEP 40/104/128, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK
    * Range: 90+ feet outdoors and 45+ feet indoors
    * Storage Capacity: 2.0GB (1GB is defined as 10^9 Bytes)
    * Power: advanced power management optimizes use of camera power
    * Card Dimensions: SD standard 32mm x 24mm x 2.1mm
    * Card Weight: 0.1oz.

~$99 list price for 2 GByte Eye-Fi card (with WiFi interface and software for PC's and Macs to automatically download and export pictures to third party websites--assuming you want to).

Thanks, I had seen EyeFi before but never thought it could do this. and  that seems like enough for most purposes, especially if you have a full blown computer available.

Anways it seems there is no way in software to make the camera transfer images over USB. You will have to shutdown you camera, then attach USB cable, and then boot the camera... :-(

There is a way to switch camera USB connection into the service mode (DCP Connect). Noone knows how it works (probably an internal canon s/w is required to manage camera in this mode).

However it is technically possible to transfer data in both directions via some hacks (using string descriptors).

The current known limitation is that USB works only in 'playback' mode, not in live picture. Surely it could be hacked up, but the complexity is quite high...
