i'm doing some art project that need to control my camera to do something
i'd like to make it keeps on the process of focusing (from far to near) but it can't find any focus point

I'm not clear exactly what you are trying to do. Do you want to shoot at different focus distances, or just keep the lens moving without shooting? Or move the lens while the shot is in progress?

CHDK is able to override the focus distance on many cameras. CHDK 1.3 (the current "development" version) as it has significant improvements in this area, although there are still quirks and problems on some ports.

Don't forget what the H stands for.

I just want my camera keep moving its focus distance without shooting.
Can I use the autofocus in the camera but make it can't find any focus point?
Thank you!!!

It's easy to write a script to do that. How quickly do you want the camera to change focus?  Do you have a focus range that you need (distance)?

Not with the cameras autofocus. It will either find something to focus on or give up after a while.

You could probably make a script that continuously moves the focus distance in a similar way. I assume this is what waterwingz has in mind.

Do you already have a CHDK supported camera? If so, which one?

This is the next question i'd like to ask... is it also depends on which camera i use?
I'm going to buy a second hand Canon PowerShot S5IS.
Can I do with that?

thanks you very very very much!!

There are only a few of CHDK supported Powershot where the focus cannot be set from a script.

  • ixus700_sd500
  • ixus750_sd550
  • ixusizoom_sd30
  • powershot N

Any other model should work.

Yes.

However,  I do not really understand what you want to do with your "art project".   From your explanation, it sounds like you only want the camera to just sit on a table top constantly adjusting the focus in some random fashion.   Is that all?

Yes, it will like that so far.
or can i record the process by scripting, too?

By record do you mean having the camera recording video during the process or having the camera take a picture each time the focus is set?
