The script does not do anything for the AF shot.  It should be just like what happens when you press the shutter button without CHDK loaded.  If it's not focussed then it would not have been focussed shooting normally.

Still on my A4000:

MF Test 2.2 65.5m SD modes:AF&MF
focus=1.1m hyperF=1.6m
AUTO: SD:1.1m mecha:666
warning : may not focus in AFL mode
AFL inf: SD:1.0m mecha:667
AFL hyp: SD:1.0m mecha:667
AFL hx2: SD:1.0m mecha:667
MF  inf: SD:infinity mecha:653
MF  hyp: SD:1.6m mecha:662
MF  hx2: SD:3.5m mecha:657
*** FINISHED ***

As for the images, #5 & 7 were out of focus as before. 6 was much better, similar in quality to the other 4, which were very similar to each other.

The mecha readings are similar to before also, with the out of focus MF lower than any of the others.

Interestingly oneaty's AUTO has the lowest mechs reading in his group, and it was out of focus. Something odd there maybe? Otherwise the mecha pattern is like mine.

(Still not getting that SD reading right.)

I'm at a loss here - even the mecha position values are not right.  Are you sure you have the camera pointed "off in the distance" at something more than 30' away ?

I've been playing with this on three of my cameras and I don't get anything like that.   I'm wondering if there is something more serious in the A4000 port at work here.

warning : may not focus in AFL mode
That warning message tells us that CHDK will not try to set_focus() in AFL mode.  You might as well just disable that in the script parameters - it's not doing anything other than an autofocus shot.

eponymous, did you set the AF to something like Center, instead of Face? I'm referring to the Canon menu, not CHDK.

What I mean is that you should have a fixed focus square at center, or else the AF can focus something closer, even if you aim at infinity. (sorry if I'm being too obvious...)

Night test here but well-lighted street.

#5, 6, 7 shot of series are always blurred.
#1, 2, 3, 4 seem fine

GO WW ! You can  :)

Yes, center, all the little goodies off. Definitely pointed at something in the distance, but I wonder whether the camera is looking for other stuff too, outside the square. The DOF display often shows numbers that are not INF while I do this.

Re-did it with another target:

MF Test 2.2 65.5m SD modes:AF&MF
focus=1.4m hyperF=1.6m
AUTO: SD:1.3m mecha:664
warning : may not focus in AFL mode
AFL inf: SD:1.3m mecha:664

MF  inf: SD:infinity mecha:649
MF  hyp: SD:1.6m mecha:662
MF  hx2: SD:3.5m mecha:657

Image 5 is clearly the blurriest and 7 is better, but not great.

WW, what's up with the SD readings? That those aren't right is bothering me.

Well, 2,3,4 are just AF shots - CHDK is ignoring the set_focus requests in AFL mode.  You can stop testing that mode.

Hmmm ... 5,6,&7 are at different set_focus values and still blurred - even though #6 is essentially the same mecha position as the AF value.

I feel like I'm watching a random number generator at work here.

Doesn't look the same mecha to me with my test ... it maybe you're referring to eponymous's test?

Thanks - missed that.

I seem to recall you tried to find a position that would focus at infinity by gradually increasing the value passed to set_focus().  And I also recall that you had no success?  So maybe this attempt to find values less that 65535 that match the autofocus infinity position is pointless.  Something else is wrong.  I'll keep working on my "find the SD override setting that gives the same mecha position value as AF does" script but I'm not hopeful.
