actually I think I did everything right. I locked the card and now I see the CHDK logo. however it must not be 'turned on' because the lens won't extend.

When CHDK loads, it does so in playback mode only.  There is a long history that I won't go into here behind that design choice.   Press the shutter button (or playback button) to switch to shooting mode and extend the lens.

Did pressing the PRINT button activate the CHDK <ALT> mode.

According to the G7 code, the two buttons that can be assigned to the ALT  button are PRINT and MICROPHONE.   Did you try MICROPHONE?

Not owning a G7,  I assume the microphone button is the one in the upper right hand corner when looking at the back of the camera.

  • Start the camera.   Does the CHDK logo appear for a couple of seconds?
  • Press the <ALT> key (either the PRINT or MIC button).  Does the <ALT> symbol appear a the bottom of the screen?
  • Press the menu button?  Does the CHDK menu appear?
  • Navigate to the RAW menu? Did you find it?
  • Select Save Raw [ * ].  Did you do that ?
  • Exit ALT by pressing the <ALT> button again
  • Take pictures normally.  A RAW version will also be saved.  You will notice an extra 2 seconds (approx.) delay between shots as the RAW image is stored to your SD card.

the logo appears but no action with the print or microphone command. I start it playback - no?
