As Waterwingz says, the photo must be an unedited one, but you can certainly copy it from the camera to your computer. Just don't trim it or PhotoShop it.

Cards of 4Gb or less need a FAT16 single partition. STICK will format it if necessary.

the current problem is that STICK sees the photo-- identifies the firmware -- but says that no CHDKs available for it. however, the CHDK site shows one for g71oo.j. and when I went the long way -non-stick-- I saw the CHDK logo etc -- but just couldn't launch it.

also my G7 didn't have the PRINT option highlighted which is need to launch the program.

When you see the CHDK splash screen CHDK runs and all is good.

Of course, your camera has a print button - see upper left corner. After you have seen the CHDK logo press the print/shortcut button. Now you can see <ALT> on the LCD screen. Press the MENU button for the CHDK menu.

Can you explain what you mean by "PRINT option" ?   Is that something you are looking for in the Canon menus?

another problem I had was that my PRINT option was not highlighted -- which I believe is needed to launch CHDK.

What do you mean?

CHDK uses the PRINT button on the camera (the one with a blue printer icon). There is no option to highlight.

In CHDK the PRINT button (or other "alt" button depending on cameras and settings) does not launch CHDK, it merely lets you access the CHDK menu. CHDK is running if the logo appears at boot.
