i have found my firmware and I an attempting to download the software CHDK. I extract the file but can't launch the file.

By far the simplest way of installing CHDK is to use my STICK utility which will do the whole job - downloading and unzipping the right build, partitioning and formatting the card (if necessary), making it bootable and copying all the files to the right place. It's quite tricky to do it all yourself particularly if you are using a card larger than 4Gb on an old camera like the G7 which will need two partitions for such cards.

THANK YOU!! I used the stick  --finally-- and got a message that no firmware was available  - am I just out of luck -- or did I do something wrong?

Do you have a G7 (2006) or the new G7 X (2014)?  The last one is not currently supported.

2006 model -- and stick could.t find the firmware. just said it was unsupported (or something similar)

wow!! you would have saved me 3 hours of work yesterday.

I got through acid and stick -- but I don't know what to do now. how do I activate it? my camera doesn't give me any options.

Did you set the SD card switch to the locked position? DId you see the CHDK logo on startup?   

If so,  CHDK activate using one of the camera's buttons - in the case of the G7 the default is the PRINT button.

did not lock card. the print button is not active .. however half of the card is now filled
