CHDK as smart meter for energy monitioring

Hi everyone,

i was looking for a device that could measure the rotation of my francis ferraris energy meter. There is commercial ones that are quite expensive or don't really show the detailed energy consumption.
I think also CHDk with the motion detection could work as smart meter. I am not really into the software and scripting and just wanted to post the idea. So if anyone has interest and ability of programming I would be happy about using such program.
I am imagining something like that the motion detection reacts on the red stripe on the wheel everytime it passes by. You could use the AF light as light source to be able to monitor in dark ambients. I guess the process might be more stable if the motion detection color is only red.
Instead of taking photos each time the red stripe passes by only a log could be written. In best case this log is evaluated by excel showing a power consumption graph.

I hope anyone else likes this idea and looking forward for your comments.

Cheers Stefan

I think i need to specify a little more:
The device i want to read/observe/detect:

The commercial option which doesn't show an hourly or second log but only day or week average values:

It might be a fun "science fair project" but this is not very practical.   You can likely do a better job with a photocell and a $10 Arduino clone microcontroller.

Still, if you want to play with it yourself,  just use the simple motion detection script that comes with CHDK and see if you can get it to trigger reliably ?

Hi Waterwingz, I thought about the Arduino too but there i have no idea at all and need to get into hard- and software. Because I'm a fan of CHDK I would like to see if we can realize also this feature. Lets see if we can realize this science fair project.

Go ahead.  Like I said in my previous post, the first step is to use the simple motion detection script that comes with CHDK and see if you can get it to trigger reliably.

Hi Waterwingz,

yes, thats what i was thinking about initially. Lets see if someone wants to join this science fair project and has fun starting a program like this. Would be fun to see CHDK beeing even capable of smart meter functions   :D
