"Props-free". So it should work on many camera (...if no issues with setting focus from scripts or menus  ). CHDK 1.3 required.
Does an image sequence for Focus Stacking in an easy way (2 automated self-explanatory steps).
For close-ups or "wide DOF" images.

Only 3 parameters to set:
1 - How your camera locks focus (e.g. my ixus 115 requires AFL   ...the 125 doesn't work   >:( )
2 - How many shots
3 - Self-Timer

Samples

bye (ciao)

Updated to vers. 1.1  (Notes & attached script)

Very nice.  What did you use to post-process the resulting images?

CombineZP is a great piece of free software for this particular tecnique. The extracted msi installer package (with latest update) works fine without setup on my windows 8 64bit system. It has a lot of features that deserve to try ... and study. Love its minimalistic UI.
Photoshop, as "all purpose" imaging software, does focus stacking pretty well.

I've had some success in the past with enfuse - following these instructions. I'm going to have another go with  fabri22's script though, as it sounds like it takes a lot of the manual faffing around and  guess work out of the process.

2 additional notes:

- the ladybug survived to the "macro focus stacking" experiment (with a plastic lens sticked in front of the ixus 115)
- the script allows something more then a close-up ... if you are having a lazy sunday  :)

ciao

Update 1.1
I've added to the script the "Close-up Range Detail" option that allows smaller distance steps in the first half part of the shots sequence.
The close-up range can be setted in mm.
The closer subject should result more detailed.
The original idea was to make incremental distance steps with small focus changes in that range.
My poor math and scripting knowledge produced a dangerous brain overheating :) so i did it my way.
More, now the FAR point can be setted to infinity via @param.

... sorry for my naive scripts, but it's a side effect of CHDK usage on "not tech" people

ciao
