That's not exactly something you can learn with a few messages on a camera forum.

However, this site appears to be just what you need :  http://lua.gts-stolberg.de/en/index.php   It's about Lua programming, is available in several different languages, and really starts from the beginning.

If you are using Windows,  I'd recommend notepad+  ( http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ )  It's free, supports Lua syntax highlighting, and handles differently text file types effortlessly.

That is always a possibility when using CHDK. However, it's not very likely if you stick to scripting with Lua native calls disabled.  But, for example, if you write a script to run the zoom lens in and out every five seconds and let it run for a couple of days, then something stupid like that could harm your camera.
