Using DNG with SX30is

I am trying to use .dng with my newly acquired SX30is, the camera has been converted to IR and I want to be able to shoot raw for the options it gives me.

I have set up CHDK to boot and everything seems fine but when I try to create the badpixel.bin things go wrong, I don't know whether I'm missing something or am just too stupid to attempt this, I've read and searched the wiki but am still none the wiser. Each time I try to create the file an error message appears asking for the camera to be put into REC-mode and the wiki states

Create badpixel.bin

Switch to record mode (there is a reminder dialog if still in display mode), Select 'Create badpixel.bin' in the RAW menu, press FUNC./SET, and the operation commences, taking approx. 20 to 40 seconds, you will notice the camera takes 2 shots, the blue Print LED will come on briefly during each shot, wait for the process to complete, you will see a display of the number of bad pixels, - that number can be disturbing to some, a figure such as 18,000 or even more is not uncommon. You can check for the file with the File Browser.

How do I switch to record mode? I realise this is a really noob question but it does not matter what I press 'momentarily' or otherwise but the CHDK menus disappear and I have to go back to the beginning.

I've searched for 'record mode' but can find nothing pertinent. I'm being driven nuts by this - even checked Youtube but all the people who have succeeded in this are using older versions of CHDK.

Thank you

Ian

"Record mode" means shooting mode (lens is extended and you can shoot).
We tend to call it rec mode or record mode because the firmware itself uses that term internally.

I'll go back and look at the CHDK manual's wording in the wiki.  Perhaps explicitly recommend putting the camera into shooting mode.

Thanks for that, having worked out what was required I tried and succeeded first time. It would I think help if the wiki stated put camera into shooting mode first then start CHDK, then run badpixel.bin, I had 'wrongly' assumed that CHDK could only be applied when first starting up, I had no idea you could be using the camera and then apply 'stuff'.

Many thanks

Ian

That was quick.

As an additional point -and again I don't know if I'm missing something basic [a brain perhaps] - but whilst this method works and I can see the .dng files on the card when using the camera, I cannot download them.

Connecting the camera via USB shows only the .jpg files, removing the card and using a card reader only shows the boot partition - using disk management software and swapping partitions shows nothing.

This morning I've tried and succeeded in dowloading images by not using the bootable version of CHDK but the firmware update method.

Once again thank you for your help

Ian

Connecting the camera via USB shows only the .jpg files,
The Canon firmware does not know you are storing image files with a .DNG extension and so does not share that information with your PC over USB.  If you use
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_1.3.0_User_Manual#RAW_File_Extension
and
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_1.3.0_User_Manual#DNG_file_extension
you can have CHDK store you DNG files with an extension your camera will recognize and transfer.

Not sure what "disk management software" you are using but this will work if done correctly.  I'd suggest trying this application : http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/wasp/wasp.html

That works because you are not using dual partitions.  If you want to autoboot on a camera released before 2011 you have to use dual partitions if your SD card is larger than 4G.   That's just the way it is.

Once again thank you, I'll get out of your hair now - I have all the answers I need.

I was using an old version of Acronis disk management - that cannot be updated.  ;)

Time to dump that particular program I think.
