*EDIT
What I couldn't find thus far is if the shutter is triggered on the ascending or descending signal flank. Could someone provide this information?
well, this is up to you and what script you use. the usb remote isnt really hardwired to the shutter. it's like this: a script is pulling information from the camera subsystem like every 10 ms. among these information is also the information if there is voltage on the usb pins or not. then it is up to you how to use that information (in the script).
edit: must... type.... faster! :D

Man, there ain't a day going by I don't learn some new amazing thing about CHDK. With scripts being able to read the voltage state of USB connector great new ways to communicating with your camera open up. Anyone remember that character encoding method using sequences of short and long elements?

Completely off-thread--but they ran a contest between a HAM guy using Morse code and a teenager text messaging on a phone using the 12 key pad. IIRC, the 170+ year old Morse Code "technology" guy was much faster.

I guess that USB button could become a nice user interface!  :o :lol

There are some flashlights out there that use various button presses (hold, press, clicks, etc.) to change light levels and even program the user interface options (you see other places I hang out on occasion).

Here's a wiring schematic I made for you Aristoc (see attached image).
The LED is optional and just indicates proper operation. The voltage regulator used here takes anything from 7V-20V I believe, so you don't have to use a 9V battery, I just find it to be the best form factor.
Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

Wow thanks so much for that basic drawing. I just picked up one of those push buttons (see image). I am going to probably be getting a Canon A460 since it is on sale new. All I have to do is open up this button and look inside to see if I can do this or not.

So all I have to do is connect the parts with some solldering and thats it?

Then once that is done I will have to use a script loaded into the camera right? Do you know off hand if this camera will focus and then take the picture if I push the button once ?

again , many thanks

You don't even have to open the button. Just cut the cable, there will be two wires inside. Connect one of the wires to the positive pole of the battery and the other wire to the input pin of the voltage regulator - just like in the schematic.

The camera will do whatever the script tells it to. Autofocus, manual focus, zoom and such can all be set by the script before taking a picture. You could even write a script that takes a number of pictures with different settings on a single push of the button. The sky is the limit.

You may also want to look at the A570... It has Image Stabilization. Depending on how stable the platform is (will the camera be on the equivalent of a tripod or will there be some vibration from the person in the chair/or vibration in the mounting, or will there be pictures when rolling, taking photos in evening/poor light without flash, etc.).

IS does really correct camera shake by 1-3 F-stops (a bit statistical in results--more "good" shots at the 1 stop, fewer "good" shots at the 3 stop)...

The a570 is a little more than the a460 but I will ask his wife what she wants to do. Good point since the camera will be attached to a flexible arm and then attached to the wheel chair. So there could be movement which would spoil the shots.

In the pic it is the one on the left attached to the tripod.
