The A590IS has built-in MF capability.

Any how, for some reason the focus mechanism isn't getting a sharp image from a lua script using set_focus(). Also, set_focus(65535) (old story) nor set_focus(-1) are not doing the job that AF does when focusing to something at a long distance.

But thanks any way for taking a look.

So does the S100 and its one of the camera's we have been having problems with.  At least two people have posted with this issue (including soft test photos at various distances).  Yet my S100 running exactly the same tests works perfectly.

Does your A590 focus correctly at infinity if you just use Canon native MF mode ?  ( i.e. not AF)

Images are soft too when using the Canon native MF mode (set at infinity). As soft as when using set_focus(65535).

Using Canon AF with a very distant object (infinity?) gives a sharp image.
Wish I could get the magic number there so I could plug it into set_focus() :)

If you read through the threads that I linked (above) you will see that there was considerable effort to do just that using a script to assist with the hunt by reading back the actual mechanical position of the focus mechanism.  The results were inconclusive beyond noting that that the reported lens position seemed to move out past the "infinity" position.
