You're getting it to work on yours.  Have you updated to the latest build?  (I'm wondering if I should try "downdating" to the version you said worked in a previous post.)
I'll revert to your version and retest.

Meanwhile, philmoz suggested on IRC that you post all the  .CFG   files from the CHDK directory on your SD card.  I'll also test using those in case something weird has happened there.

EDIT : Also, are you loading CHDK using "SD Card Lock" or "Firmware Update".  And how is the card formatted - a single FAT32  partition ?

A friend has just installed the latest CHDK on his SX50hs 100c (version 1.3.0 #3920) and attempted the procedure described at reply #8. The exposure is NEVER longer than one second, with or without timer in 'P' or 'Av' mode.  The ordinary Tv overrides do not work either even though the shutter speed is displayed top left (in red) and also when you half-press. It is always one second exposure !
This is getting weirder by the day.   As this is different from what kcblue78 reports,  it would be worth looking for PEBKAC issues first I think.

Test complete : sx50hs-100c-1.3.0-3913-full.zip works correctly.

Steps followed :
  • Verify that all Canon settings match those given in previous posts.
  • Downloaded sx50hs-100c-1.3.0-3913-full.zip to the camera using chdkptp
  • Restarted camera,  entered <ALT>, went to CHDK Settings menu, selected Reset Options to Default....
  • Exit <ALT> and power cycled the camera.
  • Entered <ALT>, went to Enhanced Photo Operations menu
  • Set Override Tv type to [  ShrtExp ]
  • Set Short Exp Value to [ 5.00000 ]
  • Disabled the Disable Overrides on Startup setting
  • Exit <ALT>
  • CHDK OSD indicates override enabled at 5 seconds (in red text at top of LCD screen).
  • Shoot normally - camera exposes for 5 seconds - resulting image massively overexposed - EXIF says Tv=5"
  • Enable 2 Second Canon self timer
  • Shoot multiple times - camera waits 2 seconds and exposes for 5 seconds - resulting images all massively overexposed - EXIF says Tv=5"
  • Curse silently and post results on CHDK forum

Note - additional Canon settings not explicitly mentioned in your posts :
  • Mode dial        Av position
  • High ISO NR   Standard
  • Date Stamp     Off
  • Single Shot     Shoot a single image  (need to disable self timer to set this)
  • ISO                    80

I can report one apparent anomaly though.  It's probably not related but the camera does not automatically take a "dark frame" when using longer exposures.  I tried a one minute exposure - no additional dark frame was taken with CHDK Dark Frame Subtraction menu set to [ Auto ] .  Setting it to [ On ] does force a dark frame to be taken.

Edit :  other things tried include using the latest 1.3.0 from the autobuild server, RAW on/off,  DNG on/off, start in playback, start in shooting mode, use P, Tv modes -  camera takes a 5 second exposure (as selected) every time.   I'm using a 2G SD card formatted FAT32 with about 200 Mb of image files stored on it.

Wow - you're taking me out of my depth here (good thing I've got waterwingz!)
What's IRC?  What are .CRG files?  Are they already on the CHDK directory of my card and I'm to post them somewhere else? or are they on a directory somewhere else and I'm to post them onto my card?  Sorry, I'm not too software-savvy...
I'm loading using SD card lock, and it's a single FAT32 partition format.

What's IRC?
Internet Relay Chat (google it).   It's where a few of the CHDK devs, supporters, and hard core enthusiasts hang out online - usually late nights USA time - and talk about recent issues.  More "real time" than posting on this forum so difficult technical issue can be discussed more easily.  Newbies welcome.

.CFG  (for ConFiGuration).  They are files used to store the various settings you make in the CHDK menu so that they stay set each time you restart your camera.    They are located in the CHDK directory on your SD card.  If you plug the card into the card reader on your PC, you should be able to find them - I think there will be somewhere between one and four of them (depending on what things you've changed in your CHDK setup).

Look for names like CCHDK4.CFG ,  OSD__4.CFG , UMENU4.CFG  (the number 4 might be a 3)

Good.  No problems here - just checking.

Thanks.  I see right away one thing you did differently from me - I was using "Ev step" to get to my exposure times, rather than "Long exp."
However, I just tried it your way, and still got the same results - a (massively overexposed) 5s shot when triggered manually, and a (properly exposed) 1/125 shot when using the self-timer to take the same shot.
(And this, despite the on-screen displays from both Canon and CHDK promising a 5s exposure...)

Oops.  Just realized you used SHORT Exp. to get to 5s(!).  So I tried that too.  Same result...

I actually tried both - but not in Ev step mode.  Got the requested 5 second exposure each time too.

I just found I'd been shooting in continuous mode rather than single shot (all the other settings you just mentioned were either the same, or greyed out).
When I switched to single shot, NEITHER manual NOR self-timer gave me the long exposure!  (Going back to continuous, I could get it again by firing manually...)
Weird...

Breaking news  :  I finally got it not to work  ! ( sort of)

I enabled Servo AF in the Canon menu and a 5 second overrride in the CHDK menu.

The CHDK OSD indicates the 5 second override is in effect.   When I "half press" the shutter button,  the Canon OSD initially indicates a 5" exposure will be used but then after it finishes focussing,  the shutter speed reverts to a normal auto exposure value. The Canon OSD changes to reflect this and if I then fullly press the shutter, I get the Canon shutter speed (1/20 in this case) rather than the 5 seconds requested.

If I don't wait for the focus to set in "half press" mode (by just mashing the shutter button all the way down) then I get the requested 5 second exposure time.  .

But - if I do this with the 2 second self timer enabled,  I get a five second exposure each time.   So this is most likely not related to what kcblue78 is is seeing but might explain the problems reported by andrew.stephens.754365

Note : it does this "shutter speed reset at half press"  in P, Tv, and Av modes, regardless of the setting in the Canon menu of Safety Shift (which is supposed to "Adjusts exposure when shutter is pressed halfway")

No,

he says fast pressing makes no difference. The shutter speed (in P mode) is the Canon value, with a slowest limit of one second.
