I was not expecting fast pressing to work unless he sees the 1/2 press behavior described.  But just to check - does he have Servo AF disabled?

So when he uses Tv override at something like 5 seconds, the CHDK OSD shutter speed does not say 5.00000 ?  If so, this is very different from what we are seeing and something else in the setup must be wrong.   I didn't pay extra for my sx50hs to get one that works - it's just a plain old sx50hs and it does Tv overrides just fine.

Is he using something in the flash hot shoe, or does the camera think there is a flash in the hot shoe due to a stuck switch (there is presumably some indication in the canon UI, but I don't have this camera so I don't know exactly) ?

There have previously been reports that CHDK overrides do not work when the hot shoe is occupied, e.g. http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12085.0

He had Servo AF disabled. With it enabled he gets the half-pressed behaviour described. He set 1/1000 sec override but exposure was the 1/4 second Canon Tv setting.

Unbelievable - there was a plastic bubble level in the hot-shoe. Now it works.

Okay - payback time then.   Can he please try the Canon self timer mode and see if the gets the same failures as kcblue78 ?  (With the plastic bubble out of course.   The SX50 has a quite nice CANON on screen level display available BTW so you really don't need a separate bubble)

FYI, there's an override for these cases in the Enhanced Photo Operations menu, called "Hotshoe override". It allows one to have a non-flash accessory in the hot shoe and still be able to use the built-in flash (and also the CHDK overrides).

He followed all instructions exactly up to post 21. Everything works perfectly.
 
(He needs the camera level in two directions so has to use a two-axis bubble level).

A couple of other notes.    reyalp pointed out in IRC that other cameras do not insert dark frame subtraction when long CHDK Tv overrides are used.  And I just confirmed on my S100 that with Servo AF enable the CHDK override is ignored just like on the sx50.

EUREKA!  Problem solved!

Believe it or not, the self-timer was messing up my long exposures because of a little plastic insert I had just filling the space in the hot shoe!  Setting the hotshoe override to "Empty" (rather than "Off", where I've had it up to now) resolves the problem - AND, so does simply removing the insert.  I guess it was having the same effect as an external flash, and even a bubble level

Something has obviously changed since the sx10 was built for, because the insert in its hot shoe never changed anything (as far as I can tell).  But thanks a million to everyone for helping me find out what - starting with waterwingz (esp. for the timer and script tips, also just the plain old helpfulness), philmoz, and in quick succession reyalp, Andrew.stephens.754365, and srsa_4c for the hotshoe info. 

Now I can go back to taking self-timer'ed long exposures to my heart's content.  You guys (gals?) are tops.

According to this thread, < Flash hot shoe - override the switch > only the sx20 fails to work with srsa_4c's hot shoe override.  The sx10 does work but it's not clear from the thread that having something the hot shoe actually causes bad things to happen on every hot shoe enabled camera.

So I just checked my trusty old G10 and inserting anything into the hot shoe also disables overrides. 

 :-[ It seems I did the original testing of the CHDK menu item for disabling the hot shoe on the SX50 but I didn't realize that it would help prevent overrides from being ignored.  The original thread was about a broken switch interfering with flash operations.

I'll find somewhere appropriate to document this on the wiki.. I'll also mention being careful with the use of Servo AF
