Hi,

If there is only one firmware version listed next to the supported camera, does that mean there is only one firmware version made by Canon for that model?

For example, I am interested in buying the Canon SX160IS. It has firmware version 100a listed.

If there is only one firmware version listed, it means that only one firmware version has been ported to CHDK.

That could mean that there is only one firmware version released by Canon for that camera.

However, it could also mean that there are several versions but only one has been ported to CHDK.

In most cases, the ported version will not work on any other firmware version. Although there are exceptions to that rule.

There is no way to tell for sure, especially on a newer camera models.

You mentioned there are exceptions.

Can I use the ported firmware version of one camera model on another camera model so long as the firmware number is the same?

No.

The exception is that sometimes the changes from one firmware revision to the next sequential revision are so small that they don't affect the CHDK port (for example, things that do not cause any code in the Canon firmware to be relocated). Then the same CHDK port can be used for both firmware revisions. This only happens occasionally. Most firmware revisions change enough things that they required a different CHDK port.
