chdkptp_gui mostly working - issue with viewfinder

Hi. I have chdkptp_gui running on a raspberry pi and linked to a PowerShot A630. Everything works except the viewfinder option. On play the viewfinder displays correctly; on record the view finder displays the first frame and thats it. I have tried reducing the frame rate but just the same. If one goes from record to play and back the display may change and look like an old tv with the linehold not adjusted correctly. Has anyone got any suggestions, ideas? Thanks

Sounds like a bug in the port. This port doesn't have all the functions implemented for complete live view support, but it should do more than you've described.

Does zebra display work correctly on this camera? Without using PTP, just enable zebra and press half shoot while pointing at something bright like a light bulb. The zebra should match up with the light.

What shooting mode do you have the camera in (P, M, video ...) ? If you haven't already, try a normal still mode like P or M.

Digital zoom can also affect the live display. I expect it would be off when you switched from play mode, but if you have had it on somehow try turning it off.

Zebra mode is working fine.

I was using on Auto but have tried in on P with the same result.

Digital zoom is off.

So connect, Rec first picture of viewfinder correctly displayed, Play last picture on camera display correctly, Rec "linehold problem" type display.

This is pretty strange. It sounds like a bad viewport buffer address, but in that case zebra should also be broken.

With the display showing the "linehold problem", press the "Quick dump" button in the debug section of the live view screen, and upload the file here.

How are you displaying from your raspberry pi, is it a physical screen connected to the pi, or are you using VNC or remote X?

If you enabled "UI Overlay", does the canon UI display correctly in record mode and update if you open and close the menu?

Sorted

I was connecting to the Pi either using Windows Remote login or in a computer screen using a HDMI converter. So I tried it on the TV directly connecting to HDMI and it worked. However that wasn’t the issue. I was running the camera with the LCD screen closed before, so it was off, and that was my problem.

So if I have the screen open and running it works - I guess I should have realised this. Thanks for your help.  I want to use this setup to take pictures of birds in the garden. So the idea is to put the camera on a tripod controlled with the Pi (running on batteries). I can then sit in the house and control the camera on a laptop via the Pi. Now this may mean having this this setup running for long periods which is why I closed the screen – I guess there is no way round this, I will be using rechargeable batteries so it’s no big deal. Thanks for your help.

Good to know.

FWIW, set_lcd_display(0) should turn off the screen without killing the live view. This won't save as much battery as having the screen completely off, since the sensor and display hardware have to run continuously, but in this case you need the live view anyway.
