As i have a Nikon reflex and going to buy a canon S120 which has non chdk support yet, i would like to buy a cheap used canon compact camera to play with chdk.

What do you suggest? I would prefer one with a quite long battery life, at least 10MP and quite wide focal.

I'm also buying a used canon camera which I hope has good CHDK support. Should I pay much attention to whether or not it's labelled alpha/beta or otherwise?

I'm mostly considering A495 or A2300 currently. I've browsed these wiki pages. So much great info!
I understand of course that I should buy a camera not only for its software support.

Not too much. To really find out whether a port has unresolved issues, you should check the wiki and forum. The development thread is usually linked from the wiki page, and is the most likely place to find known issues.

I used A495 with CHDK about 2 years. It works great.

choose camera for book scanner

Hi All.

I'm trying to choose new camera for some kind of book scanner(handwriten papers mostly).

CHDK supports many old cameras, but not so many cameras are on sale now. A2300-A4000 cameras that exist on the http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras not exist in shops in Belarus anymore. So, I need some fresh and cheap camera with 16MP or more.

My requirements for CHDK for cameras (most common for book scanner cameras):
1) ability to save RAW files(CR2 or DNG - not important) additionally to jpeg on the memory card
2) live preview with any quality via PTP - aspect ratio issues is not important at all
3) send 'shoot' command by PTP, i.e. ability to shoot and save jpeg and cr2 to memory card
4) ability to call get_image_dir() and get_exp_count() Lua script commands via PTP
5) download jpeg and cr2 files by PTP to computer and remove they from memory card
6) focus setting and lock is good to have, but can be doing manually if need

I need camera to the June 23, and I can live with some bugs if there is some interest for these cameras from developers, i.e. if bugs can be fixed after reporting.

Will try to described what I found for $100-$150:

Ixus 132, Ixus 135 - not exist in my country

SX 170(16MP CCD 16x zoom) - once camera from non-Ixus line, but looks like RAW doesn't work(it's required thing). Porting thread: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=11164.1000, known bugs: http://subversion.assembla.com/svn/chdk/trunk/platform/sx170is/notes.txt

Ixus 125(16MP CMOS 5x zoom) - very stable CHDK implementation, but not so cheap(about $200). Porting thread: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=8085.1000, known bugs: http://subversion.assembla.com/svn/chdk/trunk/platform/ixus115_elph100hs/notes.txt

So, the real choose is:

1. Ixus 140(16 MP CCD 8x zoom). Has some bugs but looks like not so critical for me. Porting thread: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=10617.1000, known bugs: http://subversion.assembla.com/svn/chdk/trunk/platform/ixus140_elph130/notes.txt

2. Ixus 240(16MP CMOS 5x zoom). Raw doesn't work in auto mode and HH reports about "multiple errors". Porting thread: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=9005.1000, known bugs: http://subversion.assembla.com/svn/chdk/trunk/platform/ixus240_elph320hs/notes.txt

3. Ixus 160(20MP CCD 8x zoom). Very promising port because camera has 20MP, but not in SVN yet. adong reported about successful RAW implementation yesterday. Porting thread: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12321.1000.

All cameras have 1/2.3" sensor. Is it important type of sensor(CCD/CMOS) for less noice ? Is it not too many 20MP for 1/2.3" sensor ?

Did I miss something ? What can you recommend for me ?

https://trac.assembla.com/chdk/browser/trunk/platform/ixus140_elph130/notes.txt

Just a note that assembla discontinued trac, so while the links work but they are stuck on r3661

Unfortunately the assembla browser doesn't give an easy way to link to the "latest", but you can get it directly from svn like http://subversion.assembla.com/svn/chdk/trunk/platform/ixus140_elph130/notes.txt

In this case it doesn't matter since there have been no changes to notes since r3661, but it might for other ports.

You can try the new code browser:

You can try the new code browser:
https://www.assembla.com/code/chdk/subversion/nodes
Yes, you can browse through, but as far as I know, there is no way to have a stable link to the most recent version of a particular file. If you browse to some platforms notes.txt, you will get a link to a specific version.

In trac https://trac.assembla.com/chdk/browser/trunk/platform/ixus140_elph130/notes.txt would always give you the head revision (until assembla killed trac). In the new browser, you can only get something like
https://www.assembla.com/code/chdk/subversion/nodes/4174/trunk/platform/ixus140_elph130/notes.txt which has a specific version in the URL.

I *think* we can (and should) remove trac from our assembla project, but I'm scared to try it.

Sorry for the OT.

Raw should work. See this post: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=11164.msg120460#msg120460
