Manual Focus - Canon SX50 HS - The way it works change

Hi Guys,

Is possible with the CHDK firmware to change the way the Manual Focus on Canon SX50 HS operate, as it is done currently in most awkward possible way:)

I would suggest that way:

1. Using rocker on the top camera, where is shutter button we set up zoom.
2. Pressing shutter button locks the zoom.
3. Using the same rocker we set up focus (the more we push rocker, the faster the focus value changes)
4. Pressing shutter button takes picture.

I think in that way it is simpler and more accurate.

In case if in point no.3 for some reasons we need to change zoom, then we can press Funct/Set button on the back of the camera unlocks zoom and we can adjust to the needs.
Pressing again shutter button lock the zoom and we are in point no.3 again and can adjust focus.

Is any chance to implement it in the next firmware ?

Kind regards,

Tom

Probably.  (Note :  CHDK is technically not Firmware and it does not modify the Canon camera firmware in any way.)

This could certainly be done with a CHDK script. Scripting is a good method for an end user to create customized actions for the camera.   However,  you do have to enable CHDK and run the script for this to happen - it's not quite like a built-in transparent modification to how the camera works.

It could also be done in CHDK C code such that if  CHDK is loaded (at camera startup) the camera functions as you describe.  However,  it's a lot more work to do it that way than with a script and required a lot more knowledge about how CHDK works internally.

Hi Waterwingz,

Thank you for the clarification.

Is anyone here capable and keen to write such script ?

I am rather poor coder (I can do only copy/paste ;) ), but do you mind to point me out to the docs/howto regarding writing the scripts ?

Kind regards,

Tom

Try this - it's "quick & dirty" but should give you an idea about what is possible.

Doing a "half press" in the shutter button cycles between focus & zoom mode. The zoom level will adjust zoom position or focus setting depending on the mode. Do a "full press" to actually shoot a picture. Pressing the MENU key will stop the script.  Other camera keys should work normally while the script is running.

Requires a fairly current version of CHDK 1.3.0 or better.
