Motion Detection Diagnosis Script / Problem with Powershot D30

My Powershot D30 is driving me crazy. I can't seem to find parameters with which md_detect_motion(...) works properly.

When using a 8x4 grid with my diagnosis script(attachment) I mostly get around 24 zones with motion returned for which md_get_cell_diff(v,w) returns up to 138 no matter which still scene I'm pointing the camera at.

Has anyone ever successfully used any motion detection script with this camera?

What parameters work for you (on other cameras)?

What values do you get on other cameras?

I just modified the script(attachment) so I can open and close the shutter using http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Meteor_Intervalometer_with_Dark_Frame_Management

With the shutter closed md_detect_motion(...) is still all over the place. (see attached screenshot)

I'm pretty sure I'm not in a highly radioactive environment...  :D

FWIW,  the script seems to work properly on my S100 (using the default parameter values).  Which would tend to suggest an implementation issue in the D30 port - I'm guessing that would be with the viewport buffers.

One quick way to check this is to use the zebra function. If the viewport is wrong, the zebra will probably show garbage instead of matching over and under exposed areas. Port bugs should generally be reported in the porting thread http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=11489.msg113052
Don't forget what the H stands for.

A post in the porting thread reports zebra as working.

Zebra looks fine to me too.
