SX40HS Review Settings

I recently bought a second hand PowerShot SX40HS after having used several PowerShot A series cameras over the years. Of course I installed CHDK right away.

The A series cameras had a feature by which the last photo taken remained on the display as long as the shutter button was held down after taking the picture. I found this to be a very convenient way to review pictures when I wanted without having all pictures displayed for a set time after shooting, though there were menu options for that too.

On the SX40HS I do not find the same functionality; instead there are only the set review time menu options.

I have checked through the CHDK menus, but have not found anything that would enable this kind of functionality. Is this something that could be added to CHDK?

You are correct. AFAIK it isn't there.

Not easily.

Hooking the shutter button press would not be too hard. But we don't control/have access to the image part of the LCD display - just the overlay in a small number of colors. So creating and displaying a usable "hold image" (likely from the RAW hooks) would be quite difficult.

The other option might be hacking the existing Canon code to "freeze" an image. That would take a lot of dissassembly work by someone who really knows what they are doing and who has a lot of spare time. And even then, there is no guarantee that a suitable hack could be found.

I had a feeling it couldn't be done in with any reasonable kind of effort.

I do wonder why manufacturer's remove good features (not to mention excellent camera models that are discontinued, e.g. A650IS).
