So the SX 20IS not supported via a "official build" per STICK pic results?

 :(Dear Forum readers:

I have been trying to download the CHDK software to my Powershot SX 20IS to no avail.
This is Build V.GMI.02B which I saw was a CHDK supported Build on the dl chart.
However I was not able to sideload it into the camera successfully and then decided to try the STICK process.

The picture from the camera I dropped on STICK stated my camera build was not a supported model.
Is this true? If not, then someone needs to correct their information presented to the public.

Is there another way to have my camera get more supported features aside from the Base CHDK if I cannot get that process to work?

I used both a Fat32 and Fat16 SD media card that was 4 gb. set to lock and unlocked and also used the Play button  to access the files. It kept saying “No Image”. I was not able to open the software with \7Zip but used Windows Explorer under Win 8.1. The files seemed to display okay.

STICK would not unpack okay on that Win 8 PC so I had to take everything over to my Win 7 model but then STICK opened okay.

If anyone has advice on what to do next I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Bill

Complete information about installing CHDK and the various methods to do so can always be found here :  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card

However, before you dig too deeply into that page (there is a lot of information there to digest),  it would be good to see what the STICK log file says about your attempt to use STICK.  If you look at where STICK is installed on your harddrive, there should be a file called sticklog.txt .  Please post that here as an attachment.   Posting a sample picture (exactly as it comes from the camera) will also help us debug your problem.

STICK should install CHDK for a SX20 camera - the table sit uses says there are builds for firmware 100f, 102b, 102c and 102d.

Note that to get STICK to work under Windows & (or 8) you must start it using stickx.cmd. If you just double-click the jar file or stick.bat it will NOT work - to do the things STICK does Windows now requires programs to be authorised - the stickx.cmd file does that - it 'elevates' the program if you permit it.

If you didn't use stickx.cmd then as the STICK webpage says, you will get the message
"STICK needs permission to analyse disk"
and the log will contain a message like this:
   Failure checking device '\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE2' - error 5

Because the SX20 is a pre-2011 camera, cards larger than 4GB will need two partitions (which STICK will set up if needed). For cards 4GB or smaller a single FAT16 partition is required.

Hey thanks again for your prompt replies.

I noticed in the STICK log file that my picture may be to big for the test process. Is that the main problem at this time?

Am attaching the picture but I have to scale it down to fit the guidelines at this forum.

Thanks for the other tips. I am sure we can make this work!

Bill

The image size if not likely to be a problem.   But resizing the picture also removed all the exif information.  STICK uses that EXIF information to decide what to do / download.   Upload the original picture to a file sharing site ( like box.com ) and post a link here?

As zeno has already posted here I assume he will come back and take a look at that log file you posted.

Hello;

I have a trial run with Box.com. Here is the link to the original pic.

Thanks,

I downloaded the picture and used it with STICK.   The correct CHDK distribution file for your SX20 was successfully downloaded to my hard drive!

So it's not something related to your SX20 or STICK.   Seem like it's something related to your computer setup but I'm at a loss as to what.  When zeno (Dave) takes a look tomorrow he will likely have a better idea.

Okay great news for the most part!

I will shoot a medium res JPEG and start over on the win 7 pc and see what becomes of it.
Can do that Monday.

We will get this done!

The image you already have (the one you just posted) should be fine.  It's only 2M bytes - tiny by modern standards and certainly not a problem for STICK.

Looking at the log fragment you posted, it seems that STICK could not link to the dll it needs to run under Windows. The STICK directory should contain two dlls as well as the stick.jar file, stick.bat and stickx.cmd.  Can you check the the dlls are there - STICK will try loading each (one is for 32-bit systems the other for 64-bit).

As WaterWingz says, there's nothing wrong with the photo, so I think STICK isn't installed correctly on your machine.

And make sure you start STICK by double-clicking the stickx.cmd file.
