The notes.txt file? Really ?
The readme (which automatically includes the cameras notes.txt) seems like most likely place for it to be noticed to me.

Yes, a lot of people won't look at the readme, but it at least gives them a chance of seeing it.

Don't forget what the H stands for.

What if we add a prefix to platform name? That should be visible when people download file from autobuild:
Something like: RISKY_ixus160_elph160-100a-1.4.0-4265-full.zip
The autobuild is some hairy tcl code that does various weird things with the filenames, so I'd be reluctant to change the format. AFAIK putting something in the same spot as alpha/beta shouldn't be a problem.

Another option would be to have someone volunteer to post (and periodically update) the stable release for the camera here as an attachment.  With a suitably worded warning in the text of the message post.  If the download count gets to some arbitrary value (200?) without any reported issues then the camera gets added to the autobuild?

I will be posting a link to ELPH 160 images in the diybookscanner.org forum soon. I am going to accompany the links with a link to this description of the bug: http://tenrec.builders/cameras/elph160.html
It seems like there could be something similar that you click through to download an image for it from the CHDK site.
BTW, please let me know if I am incorrect in my summary at the link or if there is any way that the text can be improved or clarified.
As you hopefully learned from the subsequent posts to this one, the theory about this problem being caused by filing up a dual partition card is just a theory.  At least one user has tried to duplicate that test condition and failed to damage his camera after many attempts.  So we really do not know what caused the issue or whether you can avoid it by not filling you your SD card.

Also,  the original issue actually only "bricked" one camera.  The other camera being tested resumed working so there has really only been one fatal failure.

I'm experiencing a random shutdown with the lens out when simply taking a picture with CHDK loaded.
I'm using ixus160_elph160-100a-1.4.0-4262-full build.
Can you please get a romlog and upload it here? Miscellaneous stuff -> Debug Parameters -> Save ROM crash log

Revision 4262 already has a fix that's supposed to enable some CHDK overrides, newer revisions don't have significant improvements.

@Pierre

Thanks. The crash reason is an "out of memory" situation.

The bad news is: I have no idea where this comes from. The camera has more than 3MB of free heap at start (reported earlier in this thread) which does not decrease significantly in shooting mode. Then, all of a sudden - out of memory.
This has happened to me with my ixus150, and it is the reason that port isn't in autobuild yet.
I have not been able to reproduce it on my camera.

Are you using the camera manually? If so, I can prepare a special build that permanently displays the free memory on screen - this might help finding the operation that eats up the memory.

All Auto, just switching the camera on and taking a picture... and crash.

I could test that.

I have a 160, want to help, and bricking it won't hurt my feelings... where do I sign up?
It took me a good long while to read the 20-odd pages of this thread.  As I understand it, now that I've asked for it, a link to the latest test build will be coming in my direction?
Found the link to http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Testing in an earlier post, about halfway through this thread.  I'll study up there first and try not to ask stupid questions.
