Current status of precision sync

Hi,

I have my two S110s and want to know the current status of precision sync development.

- Is there any way to enable/disable it using the CHDK menu? Or is it activated by CHDK and camera type automatically?

- Is there any solution available for the precision sync together with flash?
(I remember there was an issue)

Thanks!

Neither option is available.

Precision sync is currently something that must be built-in to CHDK at compile time using an option in the platform_camera.h file  (CAM_REMOTE_USES_PRECISION_SYNC) . So far this has only been done for the A1200 - mostly as a "proof of concept".   I believe the intention was to enable other cameras "on request" if the standard sync code was inadequate and if the requestor was willing to test that it worked properly on the camera.

AFAIK, there have been no problems reported in the CHDK forum about this.

SDM users may have discovered issues but if so, they have not shared the issue and SDM source code is still not available (after more than two years of freely distributing GPL based SDM 1.86) so I cannot confirm this.

Regardless, there has been no work on this possible issue for CHDK ports.

Hi waterwingz,

OK I understand, so I just ask the other way around:

Is somebody here using CHDK for a stereo rig?
If yes - do you have problems with synchronization especially using flash?

How does CHDK's precision sync feature compare to SDM's?

Is the SDM source download available not the complete source to the system?

It's the same -  precision sync was developed on CHDK and "borrowed" by SDM.

Under terms of the GPL, SDM source is supposed to be available as it uses a lot of GPL'd code from CHDK.   You can try contacting SDM's author - he has been distributing version 1.86 of SDM for several years now without making the source available as required by the GPL.  He has lots of excuses - none of which are legally valid.

There is nothing I hate more than a GPL offender! There is a source archive download link on the SDM page for 1.86. Not really familiar with it as to whether it is the full archive.

SDM is not supported on the cameras I am currently using anyways (A4000) so it is a mute point.

Don't take my word for it - here's a google search link to much of the eight years of history that you can browse for yourself.

If you mean the download link from here : http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/download.htm  that's for the old SDM 1.85 - posted Feb 19, 2011.  Nothing has been made available since despite many requests.

I am ready to try precision sync on the A4000. Have the toolchain setup and added the proper defines to the platform header for this cam (just copied the A1200 ones).

Any clues on the proper register settings to use?

LMK if I should post this in a different thread.

This thread is fine.    Start with the A1200 settings.   Do you have a plan on how you are going to test this?

(Hint : enable sync on one camera and make sure it works - use "one push" mode and press ... observe if camera stays "locked" until you release the press.   Then it's down to normal sync testing - lots of stuff on that on the forum.   I'll find some stuff if you are struggling).

I used the A1200 settings and it is functional. Stays locked until I release. Took 20 photos this way and no crashes or other odd behaviour.

The only CRTs I have laying around are in my old digital oscilloscopes. I should be able to use the vertical scale on one of those to test sync.
