S110 - Cannot drive by lab power supply?

Hi,

I tried to drive my S110 by my external lab power supply. But that did not work for some reason.
I created a battery dummy to connect the S110 to my lab power supply.
I set up the voltage to 3.8 V and switched on the camera. The green led lights up for one second and then the cam turns off again.
If I try the same using 3 x rechargeable batteries (Panasonic infinium 1.2 V) then the S110 works like a charm.
So I wonder why I cannot drive the S110 wit my lab power supply?
Before switching on the S110 the voltage display shows 3.8 V, maximum current I set to 1.0 A.
If I switch on the S110 the voltage shows only 1.5 V - but the current display shows 0.00 A?
So how the power can go down from 3.8 to 1.5 V without pulling any current?

Could someone enlight me?

Thanks...

You camera is likely drawing more than one amp when it turns on and tries to extend the lens.   Your power supply current limits at that point and lowers the output voltage.

1.0 A is not enough. You need 1.5 - 2.0 A depending on camera.

The specifications of an external power supply (ACK-DC30) for the S110: output 4.3V, 1.5A
=> http://www.amazon.de/KAMERA-NETZTEIL-LADEGER%C3%84T-passend-ersetzt-ACK-DC30/dp/B004O750Z0/ref=sr_1_1?s=ce-de&ie=UTF8&qid=1430138393&sr=1-1&keywords=ACK-DC30

Hi msl,

thanks for reply. I changed now the maximum current to 3.0 A. So the cam could pull from 0.0 A up to 3.0 A just what is needed. I set the voltage to 4.2 V now. But same result  :(.

Here are the steps:
1. Set the voltage to 4.2V
2. Set max. current to 3.0 A
3. Connect the lab power supply to dummy battery

Now the voltage goes immediately from 4.2V down to 1.7 V - the cam is still switched off!?!
The lab power supply shows 0.00 A current - so no current is pulled but voltage goes down?

4. Switch on the camera - nothing happens.
5. Increase voltage from 1.7 V to 3.8 V
6. Switch on the cam again, now the green LED turns on, the S110 display as well but only for only 1 sek. then cam switches off again  :(

I tested with my 2nd S110 just to compare - but exactly the same result.
Lastly I tested again with 3 x 1.2 rechargeable battery (Panasonic infinium) - It works like a charm on both S110.

I don't understand - what is the difference between external battery and the lab power supply?

Off hand, I would say your lab power supply is defective.  But that's without being able to see exactly how you have everything wired up.

I would think the same. I run my S110 with lab power (and 3 x 1.2 rechargeable batteries) without any problems. But I use the always maximum current on the lab power. Have you tried the lab power with some other destination?

Hi msl and c_joerg,

thanks for reply, but I really doubt that the lab power supply is defective.
I use this for many electronic handicrafts and never had problems at all.

It drives my arduino, a stepper motor driver (more that 2.0A!) and many more.
Would it do that if it is defective?

It's really wierd

One thing I have encountered, many regulated power supplies will instantly go into protect mode if another switching regulator is connected as a load.

Do you have a decent dummy load resistor or even a light bulb you can connect to your power supply that can draw the full load of the power supply?

Try it, read the volts with a digital voltmeter on full load and no load.

If the volts are within the correct range, try drawing one amp from your power supply, read the volts with a digital voltmeter.

If the the volts are within the correct range, leave the one amp load attached, connect your camera. If it works, try reducing the external load to 0.25 amp with the camera connected.

With some trial and error you may find the exact external current required to stop the power supply going into shutdown mode.

"..., but I really doubt that the lab power supply is defective...."
My guess is that the ".. power supply's overload (crowbar).." is
working OK see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowbar_(circuit)

You could try a small series resistor to simulate a almost flat camera battery
and a large capacitor at the battery adaptor.

Hi,

I put two capacitors (each 2200uF) parallel to the S110 - but this did not change anything :(
